One of the pleasures of getting older is reconnecting with “old” friends, as many did during the third annual DMU Reunion Aug. 13-15, 2010. More than 80 alumni from 19 states and all programs enjoyed catching up with classmates, sharing memories and marveling at their alma mater’s exceptional students, faculty and facilities. “What a wonderful, exciting and emotional weekend of camaraderie and brotherhood,” stated Harry Micklin, D.O.’60, FACN, in a post-reunion letter to DMU staff. The Fort Worth, TX, grad and his classmates celebrated their 50-year milestone reunion. “And, yes…you can go home again!”

Save the date for next year’s reunion, June 17-19, 2011. Find more information and photos and video from the 2010 reunion.

The annual Scholarship Fund Dinner was held Oct. 14. Elizabeth Ceballos was the recipient of this year's Glanton Scholarship.

Long-time Iowa civil rights leader and DMU Trustee Willie Stevenson Glanton greets Glanton Scholarship recipient Elizabeth Ceballos, D.O.’12.

Elizabeth Ceballos grew up being told she would eventually work at a canning factory in her Idaho hometown. The oldest of six children, she was often charged with taking care of her siblings.

These days, however, Ceballos is a third-year College of Osteopathic Medicine student, thanks to her rock-solid work ethic, sheer determination and some financial help from the University’s Glanton Scholarship Fund.

“Being in medical school has been a surreal experience for me,” she told the nearly 500 guests at the University’s annual Glanton Scholarship Fund Dinner on Oct. 14. “I still have a hard time believing that I’m living my dream.”

Her dream and those of other Glanton Scholarship recipients are supported by donors to the fund, which DMU created to help make medical and health sciences education more accessible for students under-represented in the professions.

“Thanks to your generosity, I am able to borrow less in loans,” Ceballos said at the scholarship dinner. “But more important, I won’t ever have to work at that canning factory – I will be a well-prepared physician who is passionate about improving the quality of life for others.”

The scholarship honors Willie Stevenson Glanton and the late Judge Luther T. Glanton Jr. Both lawyers, they dedicated their lives to professional leadership and community service. That included service to DMU: Judge Glanton joined the DMU Board of Trustees in 1979; when he died in 1991, Mrs. Glanton took his place on the board, became its chair in 1999 and continues to serve today.

Since DMU created the scholarship fund in 2004, it has grown to more than $1.5 million, including more than $230,000 given by donors during the past year. “The individuals and organizations that support the Glanton Scholarship Fund foster both opportunities for deserving students and diversity in health care,” says Sue Huppert, vice president for alumni and development.

This year’s Glanton Scholarship Dinner honoree was Robert Ray, J.D., who served as Iowa’s 38th governor from 1969 to 1983. In addition to appointing Luther Glanton to the district court bench in the mid-1970s, making him the first black judge in Iowa, Ray championed civil rights for all. Since leaving office, he has continued to serve the community, including as interim mayor of Des Moines, co-founder of the Institute for Character Development and co-chair of the National Coalition on Health Care.

When it comes to being a doctor, Michael Miller, D.O.'85, FACOS, FAPWCA, CWS, does it all and then some.

When it comes to being a doctor, Michael Miller, D.O.’85, FACOS, FAPWCA, CWS, does it all and then some. He cares for patients in Indianapolis and rural southern Indiana through his two comprehensive wound care centers and in several nursing homes. He served his country as a major in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps overseas during Operation Desert Storm, and he’s since helped train health care providers around the world.

He has published more than 30 medical articles and book chapters, lectured at nearly 100 scientific programs and presented nearly 60 scientific posters. A principal investigator on numerous research projects, he serves on the editorial review panels of six major podiatric and wound care journals.

What’s more, Miller is an inventor who holds several patents on wound dressings and treatments. He makes house calls and, at least once a month, serves patients at a local free clinic.

For all Miller is and does, on Oct. 24 he was honored as the American Osteopathic Foundation Physician of the Year at the American Osteopathic Association’s Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition in San Francisco.

“Dr. Miller is always the consummate osteopathic physician who cares for patients in a holistic way, promoting the self-healing process,” stated Eric Newgent, D.O.’84, in his nomination of Miller for the award. A sleep and occupational medical physician in Baraboo, WI, Newgent and Miller were roommates at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences, now DMU.

“Imagine a five-foot-two Andrew Taylor Still,” Newgent adds, comparing Miller to the father of osteopathic medicine.

Miller finds “joy” in enhancing his patients’ quality of life through care, innovation in wound treatment and the education of other care givers. He holds renewable licensure in China, where he helped train the first group of university physicians on wound care and healing in 2004. He has worked with physicians and given presentations in the U.S., Israel, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Spain and, this spring, in Kuwait.

“Being a good clinician is important, but teaching others is equally important,” he says.

In August, Miller was in Miami Beach, FL, discussing his newly patented wound dressing with fellow attendees at the annual conference of the Federation of International Medical and Equipment Suppliers. He also consults insurance companies toward the goal of getting better care for patients, and he’s a medical advisor to Diabetic MD, a company offering nutriceutical products formulated to treat diabetic and other slow-healing wounds.

Miller says he feels “awkward” about the attention of the AOF honor. “The things I do, I do because they’re fun,” he says. “The travel, the discourse, doing the research, developing new dressings and helping patients we heretofore couldn’t help – I have so many joys in my life.”
