This rotation is at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. It is English speaking and will accept up to eight third- or fourth- year students at a time serving a four to eight week rotation. You will be rotating at Mulago Hospital in Kampala. Lodging is provided at the Edge House, which is a 20 to 30 minute walk from the University.

You will have an opportunity to listen to lectures from local and guest physicians. The rotation will provide you with tropical medicine exposure. Once a week on Monday, you will travel to St. Stephens Hospital which is a 25-bed hospital in a rural setting. Students from all over the world rotate at this hospital.

Application process

There is an application process which includes filling out an application and sending it to Susan as well as other needed documentation. A student reference guide is available, which should answer all of your questions regarding the site and rotation details. The application and guide will be sent to you as individual documents.

Airfare and travel

You will want to fly into Entebbe International Airport. A van will usually be arranged for a faculty of medicine staff member to meet most visitors holding a signboard with your name on it. If not, taxis are available at the airport and at an estimated cost of $30 to Kampala. It will be approximately a one-hour drive. Taxis provide reliable and economic conveyance around town. Also available are 14-seater mini buses. For car rental and driving, you must have a valid local driving permit. International driving permits are also accepted.

Documents needed for travel

A student visa is required to enter the country which costs around $20. Also required is a valid passport issued and recognized by your government and an international inoculation certificate against yellow fever.

Accommodations

Edge House is located at Makerere University’s main campus. The house is a self catering resident. There is a small fee to stay here with several options for room rates and occupancy. After your rotation has been approved, you will want to inquire about the availability of space and book your room at that time. Dress code

The dress code in the work environment is business casual. Men wear collared shirts, ties and cotton trousers, and women wear dresses and skirts (to or below the knee) or dress trousers. A modest dress code should be followed at all times. An umbrella, raincoat and jacket are recommended for the wet season.

Currency

The currency in Uganda is the Uganda Shilling. Several bank machines accept foreign ATM cards. Credit cards are not used in Uganda. Money can be obtained through a VISA advance at Barclays bank with a 10 percent charge. Foreign Exchange Bureaus are readily accessible and offer standard exchange rates. Please bring U.S. dollars in larger denominations, $100 bills are preferred but nothing smaller than $50 bills.

Food

All types of food are available in a variety of supermarkets and small shops with fresh vegetables and fruit readily available at low prices. Popular supermarkets in the area include Uchumi and Shop Rite. There is also an excellent choice of restaurants around Kampala at reasonable prices that serve Italian, Indian, French, Chinese and English food. Fast food restaurants are also available in the area.
