Basic Science Foundational Knowledge for Medical Graduates

It’s what we’ve discussed many times and recognized as a truism. Basic science knowledge is essential to the practice of good medicine; but what basic science knowledge? The AAMC and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, together with a select group of scientists, physicians, and science educators, worked to identify the essential scientific background our future physicians will need. The resulting attached report, Scientific Foundations for Future Physicians, suggests some of the scientific competencies in which students should be competent prior to medical school matriculation and that medical students must understand upon completion of their degree program.
