Sheila and Michael at 10,500 feet in the Himalayas

Namaste! I’m writing this post after just having spoken to my wife from the other side of the world, in Kathmandu, Nepal. On February 21, DMU posted on Facebook about the Global Health program, and how students have the ability to choose rotations in an international setting. I won’t go into that because I don’t know all the particulars, but I’ll tell you it’s possible. In fact, my wife Sheila was instrumental in securing Nepal as an acceptable rotation site, as she had many contacts there from her time spent doing research for her master’s degree in nutrition in 2000.

Don’t forget: the University is closed Dec. 23-26 but will re-open Dec. 27. It will then be closed again Dec. 30-Jan. 1. The halls get pretty quiet around here on those days in between so we’ll probably cya all in January!

Global Health conference

by

On October 13, our global health department and the Heartland Global Health Consortium are again hosting an awesome conference. This year’s topic, “the influence of agriculture on global health,” ties really nicely to the World Food Prize conference going on at the same time in Des Moines. Some of the speakers and attendees will be able to attend both.

Not only will you get to hear from amazingly experienced global health experts from around Iowa, you’ll get to hear from the president of Pioneer Hi-Bred and the SNS deputy undersecretary for food, nutrition and consumer svcs. with the USDA. That will be really interesting!

World Malaria Day – April 25

by

In the U.S. we don’t often worry about contracting disease with flu-like symptoms from a parasite. And yet there are up to 500 MILLION cases and one million deaths from malaria around the world. All from a lil mosquito!

What can you do? Learn about malaria, sponsor a bednet and spread the word!

I can think of very few professions as altruistic as the one you have chosen. You go through years & years of school and devote yourselves completely to the well-being of others. For this we thank you and celebrate you!
