From autism to Alzheimer’s

by

Do you want to know more about supporting youth diagnosed with autism? How about new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, malignant melanoma, migraine and more? Want to explore the ethics of medically treating family members, the health effects caused by the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001, or the “slippery slope” of the increased use of medical interventions in labor and delivery?

You can learn about these and many other topics thanks to members of DMU’s physician assistant Class of 2012. Right now they are wrapping up their rotations and preparing to present their master’s projects, which they’ll do next Tuesday through Friday, May 29-June 1.

Iowa is a relatively flat state, but on a recent Sunday morning in Des Moines, more than 600 people got plenty of elevation: They participated in the American Lung Association Fight for Air Climb, during which they climbed 66 floors of stairs in three downtown office buildings. Participants included a team of five DMU physician assistant students, with 11 more volunteering at the event along with PA Assistant Professor Laura Delaney.

According to Micki Sandquist, executive director of ALA in Iowa, Fight for Air raised $164,227, making it the organization’s biggest fundraiser.

Over the past five years, DMU has averaged a 95% first-attempt pass rate on the PANCE, while the national average has been about 93%.
