You attend rigorous classes daily, study for hours on end, and when you aren’t in class or studying you are trying to catch a few z’s. So this weekend, why not indulge a little bit.

Indulge

Instead of snuggling up to your books in the library, how about you take a few hours to indulge yourself with artisan cheeses, delectable chocolates and some fabulous wines from around the world. Enjoy live musical entertainment by Jason Walsmith of The Nadas as you browse the galleries of West End Architectural Salvage. Here are the details:

I hear more and more talk about the importance of eating “real,” and I’m convinced an important component of that is eating local. I appreciate that will require me to adjust my own expectations – for example, not fretting when I can’t get good fresh tomatoes in the winter, because fresh tomatoes don’t grow in Iowa when the temps drop and the snow flies. I believe good cooks are like artists, and I consider Lynn Rosetto Kasper among them. She’s the host of the American Public Media program “The Splendid Table,” which I try to catch every weekend for great recipes, cooking tips and fun conversations with avid foodies. If nothing else, check out last weekend’s recipe for fluorescent Jell-O gin and tonics.

Speaking of art, a couple of local events offer a plethora of visual entertainment. Today and tomorrow is the Metro Arts Expo, hosted by the Metro Arts Allianceof Greater Des Moines, at Capital Square at 5th and Walnut, downtown Des Moines. Admission is free to the event, which

Let’s play some football!

by

When Des Moines University celebrated its centennial in 1998, students creatively created a fun event to mark the occasion: They invited students of nearby Drake University Law School to play a football game. The “Malpractice Bowl” has been held every year since and will again occur this Saturday, Oct. 29, starting with the women’s game at 11 a.m., the men’s game afterward, and a friendly barbecue to wrap it up.

Students have a ton of fun with the event. DMU students started designing Malpractice Bowl t-shirts some years ago, with snarky taglines like “Des Moines University – helping OTHERS since 1898….Drake Law – helping THEMSELVES since 1881.” One year’s shirt depicted a bulldog, Drake’s mascot, chasing an ambulance.
