What began as a fun goal crashed into a health issue that knocked me off my feet: My sister invited me to join her in a five-kilometer event to be held as part of our hometown’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities. While I’m not a runner, I’ve been working out fairly regularly at home and in DMU’s wonderful wellness center. And, hey, what healthy adult can’t handle completing such a relatively short distance?

A few weeks ago, Dr. Melita Schuster from the DMU Clinic gave a campus presentation on gluten-free diets. She talked about how gluten intolerance runs the whole range from sensitivity to severe, known as Celiac disease. The symptoms can range from pain to bowel, thyroid or reproductive issues. I found it personally very intriguing because my mom is gluten intolerant and this month I’ve cut gluten and dairy from my diet to see if it’d alleviate some of my headaches, congestion, etc.

Tonight at 7 is the first session of our new Power Hour series in the DMU Clinic. It’s completely free, open to all, no RSVP required, and gives local athletes a chance to hear from experts on how to prevent or treat injuries!
Tonight’s session is on running. The next one is March 30 on swimming. Then it’s cycling in April. Core strengthening then nutrition in May. Check out more info and c’mon over to the Clinic tonight!

October is national physical therapy month. Did you know that in most states you can schedule an appointment with a physical therapist without a doctor’s referral? Most people associate seeing a physical therapist with rehabilitation after an injury or surgery, but physical therapists can help anyone improve his mobility and quality of life.
Read how one of our alums, Anna DeWaay, is helping patients who have had breast cancer surgery.
If you think you could benefit from seeing a physical therapist, head to the DMU Clinic. Our physical therapy clinic offers a range of services including:
- Physical exam/functionality assessment
