If campus seems bare today it’s because our employees and students have been given a unique and exciting opportunity to volunteer. Over 125 people from the DMU community are in downtown Des Moines at Wells Fargo Arena taking part in the First Lady, Michelle Obama’s, 2nd anniversary of her ‘Let’s Move’ initiative.
Let’s Move is a campaign started by Mrs. Obama two years ago to promote healthy living amongst our nation’s kids. It is a program that was made to solve the problem of childhood obesity. The Let’s Move campaign has ‘provided children with healthier food and greater opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities, helped get families the information they need to make healthier decisions, supported a healthy start in early childhood, and have worked to ensure more people have access to healthy, affordable food.’

One of the ways Des Moines area residents kick off Black History Month is with the hugely popular African-American festival I’ll Make Me a World in Iowa. The first year for this event was 1999 with 1,000 people in attendance. The popularity has grown over the years and numbers have soared with this year’s totals expected to be between 15,000 and 20,000 attendees.
This FREE, family-friendly event takes place this Saturday, January 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Polk County Convention Center. Many local acts and groups will be performing. This is a great way to get to know some of them.

You attend rigorous classes daily, study for hours on end, and when you aren’t in class or studying you are trying to catch a few z’s. So this weekend, why not indulge a little bit.

Instead of snuggling up to your books in the library, how about you take a few hours to indulge yourself with artisan cheeses, delectable chocolates and some fabulous wines from around the world. Enjoy live musical entertainment by Jason Walsmith of The Nadas as you browse the galleries of West End Architectural Salvage. Here are the details:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Des Moines University campus and clinic is closed today.

DMU alum Dr. William Anderson, who will be on campus tomorrow to speak about his experiences, actually worked alongside the man we honor today. Read more about some of Dr. Anderson’s work.
We hope you can join us tomorrow for this very special event.
