Grad school interview tips

Prospective students on an interview day at DMU

It’s interview season at DMU and colleges across the country. Most days you will find young people walking around campus in suits looking nervous and/or excited.

Before your grad school interview, here are some tips from our admission office for a successful interview:

Before the interview:
Practice makes perfect! Have your advisors or professors (or even roommates) do mock interviews with you practicing everything from your handshake and introduction to your good bye.

Confirm your interview.

Dress professionally. If you don’t have a suit, buy one. Don’t be afraid to be the best-dressed person in the room.

Arrive on time. Don’t be too early (15 minutes early gives you plenty of time to check in and relax, any earlier and we may not be ready), and definitely don’t be late.

Research the school you’re interviewing with prior to your arrival.

Review your application. Anything you said there is fair game for interview. Be ready to explain any weak points in your application.

During the interview:

Be a physical therapist

You should consider being a doctor of physical therapy. Now is the time to apply to Des Moines University! The Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 cycle (classes start August 2011). Due to our rolling admission policy it is best to submit your application early in the process.

5k in review

Post-RaceSaturday was the Des Moines University Run-Day-Voo, a 5k run/walk for students, alumni, staff and friends. Lisa Vroegh and I, from the Enrollment office, decided to participate in the event this year. As walkers. We don’t run.

Despite being toward the end of the pack, we had a great time.  It was wonderful to see more than 270 members of the DMU community participating in such a fun event together. The course took us south of the University into beautiful neighborhoods full of challenging hills. Along the way students were there to guide us and provide us with encouragement. Afterwards D.O. and D.P.T. students were on hand to provide free OMM and stretching treatments.
