Thank you, Mrs. Lundstrom (or Lunchroom, if you’re a kindergartner)

I am sure everyone can think back over their educational career and know there were a few significant people that stand out who helped us along the way in one way or another. There are also people in your everyday life at work or in the community too that you may have turned to for advice.

It may have been your kindergartner teacher taking you by the hand to introduce you to other children because you were so shy; your coach spending extra time with you so you finally got the right move down in basketball even if you never won a game; or your advisor listening to you cry because you think you just failed your finals and you do not know what you will do with your life now. It seems like there is someone there when you need them the most to guide you by giving you insight, recommendations or just a listening ear.

Looking back who knew that those mentors were shaping you to be who you are today even though you may have not realized it at the time nor have you seen that person for years.

To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. Fellow alumni, I urge you to consider being a mentor to DMU students; register today.

We have many ways for you to get involved with the CHS Alumni Association if you haven’t already joined us for one of the past activities.

Here are just some of the upcoming events: graduation activities at the end of May, the annual alumni reunion in August (which has many, many activities for all ages) and the CHS golf outing in September.

If you are not able to make it back to campus for these activities, you can always participate in other ways such as through the Mentor Program, the global health trips, the Annual Giving fund, and even contribute to the blog… I have to admit it isn’t that hard!

Welcome to the first official blog from the College of Health Sciences Alumni Association. Many of you may not know about our group, so I thought I would make the introduction. Our Alumni Association is a comprised of all the College of Health Sciences programs and many functions are collective activities with students &/or staff and faculty. We are still new ‑ we started only a few years ago and the word is still spreading to all of alumni, so share the word and connect your classmates to us! The CHS association is designed to support the College’s mission and be a liaison between alumni and current students. If you are interested in finding out more, visit www.dmu/alumni.Okay, enough about the details, let’s talk about the fun stuff! Our alumni have been very busy. I want to throw out a special “thank you” to Fritz Nordengren, an M.P.H. alum, for speaking at the Iowa Association for Healthcare Quality Annual meeting in April. Fritz, as many of you know, is a faculty member for the M.H.A. and M.P.H. programs. His presentation was about the link between personality types and quality improvement and there were some outstanding comments about his presentation. Thanks Fritz for representing the DMU programs and proving CHS alumni shine!

I know many of you are just as engaged in your profession and also spend countless hours contributing just like Fritz. We want to hear about the activities and events that “showcase” our CHS alumni. Please feel free to send this type of info to the alumni office so we can share your news.
