Rain, rain, go away!

by

Come again some other day, preferably not anytime soon!  This week has been a sloppy wet mess!

I’ve heard people with kids lamenting that they can’t play outside. So what do you do when it’s rainy or (I know it’s not fun to think about yet) snowy and you can NOT play one more board game?

There’s always the fun activities at home like baking cookies, playing hide&seek, Legos, etc., but sometimes you need to get OUT OF THE HOUSE! Do you or your kids have a fave story time at a library or even at the mall? Do you have a membership at the Science Center?

Friday recipe: baked mac & cheese

by

Who doesn’t love a big bowl of macaroni and cheese? Unfortunately Kraft’s blue-box special is less-than healthy. I have no idea how they can make powdered cheese taste so good, but don’t you wonder why it’s such a fluorescent orange color? That can’t be natural.

This recipe from Weight Watchers includes a little butter, reduced-fat cheese and spinach. I can’t wait to try it!

Lighter baked macaroni and cheese

12-oz high-fiber elbow macaroni
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon light butter
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup minced onion
2 cups skim milk
1 cup fat-free vegetable or chicken broth
8-oz. reduced-fat mild cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper to taste
4 cups baby spinach
1/8 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup seasoned whole-wheat bread crumbs
Butter-flavored spray

Lunch event TODAY, Thursday!

by

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a HUGE fan of Summerfield’s cafeteria, especially with all their fancy new updates & entree options. BUT sometimes it’s nice to get away over lunch & today is such a day…. Luckily for you there is a cool event downtown you should go to TODAY (Thursday, 9/16). It’s called “Destination 10th Street,” runs 11-2 and is outdoors on 10th street, hence the name, between Walnut & Mulberry.

There’s music & artists & you can choose a $5 lunch from Centro, Django, Panera, Raccoon River Brewery & Smokey D’s bbq. Add a drink or dessert for another buck.

Mentors

Thank you, Mrs. Lundstrom (or Lunchroom, if you’re a kindergartner)

I am sure everyone can think back over their educational career and know there were a few significant people that stand out who helped us along the way in one way or another. There are also people in your everyday life at work or in the community too that you may have turned to for advice.

Behavioral med in video games

So med school has definitely started picking up at this point – we’ve already had several exams, with three more to come in the next two weeks (including our first anatomy exam, which consists of two parts totaling four hours combined). I must say, they’ve certainly begun to lose their novelty. In undergrad, tests are a rare stressor that comes only once or twice a month. Now, it seems like we have at least one a week, though their volume is in no way diminished.
