Go ride a bike!

by

Des Moines is making headlines again, this time with the launch of Bcycle. Right now the only other two cities with this are Denver and Chicago. Way to go Des Moines for embracing bike culture early on!

The business model is based on the idea of  bike sharing. You can rent a bike from convenient bike stations around the city, encouraging people to ride instead of drive to locations that may be too far to walk to. There are currently 4 bike stations in downtown Des Moines. All bikes include a basket too!

There are two membership levels, 30 day or annual or you can pay for a 24-hour rental ($5) at a B-station. This qualifies you for 24-hour bike passes for the set amount of time. Bikes can be returned to any B-station, kind of like Redbox movies.

Check out the website for more details and a map with pick-up and drop-off locations. They are offering free 24-hour passes through Sept 7.

Who already rides their bike to school and around town?

This idea was really good. I prefer riding a bike when going to school than to ride a taxi or my car to get some exercise at the same time save fuel and our environment from pollution.

    Thanks,
    Trudis

Ohh that sounds great! i highly recommend the use of bike nowadays because as we noticed, our planet is dying we need to do something to preserve it. we must minimize the use of cars. we can also lose weight to that ^_^

This is a great idea that I think every school should embrace. thats why I bought my 4 yr son a bike instead of a motor vehicle.

I love this idea! I think it is a great program, and hope it really works well, so other cities will adopt it. Yay for biking and improved health!

Awesome! This is just like the zipcar service we have here in the city, but a lot more environmentally friendly!

Bike riding is an awesome way to exercise, since a lot of the breeze can keep you cool (not always however), a good way to get around, its free (apart from the cost of the bike) and you get fit doing it!

I love this idea and can’t wait for it to come to San Francisco. I think that it will take off even more than the Zip Car model, given it’s zero footprint!

This is so true. Riding bikes should be enforced within every government in every state, in every country. Such amazing benefits to a child who rides a bike. Great post.

I think as we see gas prices rise to all time highs again, this concept will become more well received. I wasn’t aware of any programs in place which do more than just promote this healthy lifestyle. Great Post.

Wish I lived in an area where I could ride a bike all the time. Not even any bikes lanes here in KC!

Neat idea! I think Washington D.C. has an idea very similar to this. Like zip car but way better for the environment!

  37. Posted by Casey on 01.09.10 at 3:26 pm

Well, I think it’s a great idea. I grew up in the country walking and riding bikes. I relocated to the city when i got older and here inHouston, TX we have railcars. All most like a trolly but it’s new age. Hey, it will do a great job at cutting back in all the nasty pollution we leave in the air in a daily basis. Great post here!

With the actual oil price, it seems like a great idea! And its good to loose weight. Thanks.
