Providing healthcare is scientific but it also involves a human element. Get in touch with your creative side by submitting a piece of poetry, an essay, a photograph or piece of artwork dealing with the human side of healthcare for the fourth edition of Abaton, DMU’s student-produced literary journal. The deadline is July 1.
This year, essays or submissions by current medical students from all institutions will be eligible for a $1,000 Richard Selzer Prize.

Andrea Cooley gets paid to post on Facebook and Twitter (among other things) to promote Des Moines University to prospective students. She is a Midwest girl at heart, but loves to travel around the country visiting friends and family. If Des Moines had mountains or an ocean she’d never leave.
Before joining the DMU marketing team, she was an editor for Country Home magazine. She’s still a little obsessed with magazines, so if you want to talk about decorating, remodeling or gardening projects she’s your go-to girl.

Thanks Andrea, for this post. But I needed to ask, can people from other nations also send photographs or essays or poetry? Or is it not open to all? The idea reflected in this post is wonderful.

Thanks for your interest. Yes, people from outside the United States are welcome to submit entries for Abaton.

This is a great initiative from DMU.Great to know that there is one such event that will allow others to explore the human side of healthcare.Really an innovative and a creative idea.Would like to get more updates.If you can publish a few entries…that would be really nice.

The Abaton is a creative piece of work by the students of DMU. It is not only a journal but also a place for anyone to show their creativity in the field and hence will serve a lot towards mankind. It was a great initiative taken by the students and the faculties. I wish them and the magazine all the best for their coming venture.

It is a very creative work by the DMU students. It is a journal as well as an option for everyone to show their creativity in the field and hence will provide a lot towards mankind. It is really great initiative for both students and faculties…..
