There is SO MUCH GOING ON. How to decide what plans to make? Here’s some fun ideas to add to your list:
Head to the ballpark to witness a citizenship ceremony, I-Cubs game & fireworks on Sunday, July 4.
Yankee Doodle Pops is a huge annual tradition in Des Moines. This year it’s on the 1st at about 6:30 p.m. with jazz, then the orchestra begins at 8:30 to kick off the fireworks! Find a spot of grass or bring a lawn chair. The fun happens on the capitol grounds.

I’ll be the first to admit that I hate sacrificing sleep time (well, who doesn’t?) but sometimes it is not a choice. I’ve always needed an exceptional amount of sleep to be fully functioning the following day, so I knew going into the medical field was going to challenge me physically.

Health care reform continues to be a hot topic and a recent article in the Business Record addresses the shortages of primary care physicians and how federal investments are aimed to help this.
DMU is doing its part by educating doctors and physician assistants to meet the growing needs of Iowans and Americans. As the largest medical school in Iowa, Des Moines University has more than 800 students in its doctor of osteopathic medicine program and 100 students in its physician assistants program.
Another interesting fact is that more doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.s) are primary care physicians than M.D.s. Did you know that?

I have a new favorite source for healthy recipes: Eating Well. How have I not heard about this magazine/website? I pride myself on being in the loop when it comes to magazines, but somehow this one slipped through my radar. Now that I’ve discovered it, I have some catching up to do!
It’s been steamy hot in Des Moines the last few weeks and it’s only barely summer, so I’m all about no-cook recipes and even better, popsicles! I can’t wait to try these chocolate-raspberry frozen yogurt pops. Yum!
Chocolate-Raspberry Frozen Yogurt Pops
2 cups fresh or frozen raspberries
3 cups nonfat or low-fat plain yogurt, preferably Greek-style
3-5 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

If you’re interested in applying to medical school or pursuing a career in health care the best way to get a feel for a school or program is to visit the campus and ask a lot of questions. For the next 2 days, Des Moines University is hosting 8 undergraduate students
for the 2nd annual Podiatry Preview.
Students applied from schools all over the country. We chose students from: University of the Incarnate Word, Pepperdine University, Simpson College, Penn State University, Brigham Young University, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, College of William and Mary and Brown University.

One of my all-time favorite Des Moines festivals (& I pretty much love ‘em all) is the Des Moines Arts Festival and it’s THIS WEEKEND! The festival runs Friday: 4-10 p.m., Saturday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. downtown near the sculpture garden. Street parking is free. Browsing is free. There’ll be live tunes and amazing works of art to browse & possibly buy.
Plus, all food eaten outdoors while in good company is extra delish. At the festival, try a hot dog, pizza, Greek specialty, caramel apple, chips with nacho cheese, pork chop on a stick, veggies & noodles, shish kabob, cheese curds, perogies, lemonade, ice cream, fried rice, samosas or kettle corn and enjoy.
