What is a D.O.?

by

Happy Osteopathic Medicine Week!

Did you know there are two types of doctors in the United States? A doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) and a medical doctor (M.D.). Most people don’t know if their primary care physician is a D.O. or an M.D. Both doctors can prescribe medicine, perform surgery and treat patients, but there are some differences between the two.

Students at Des Moines University study to become D.O.s. That means our students take the same classes as students at an M.D. school plus courses in osteopathic manual medicine (OMM). Osteopathic medicine also tends to be taught as more of a holistic way of treating people – focusing on a whole person, not just one symptom or syndrome.

DO something!!

by

I know our students & staff already work hard and give back to the community all the time. BUT I found this cool website called www.DOsomething.org that can connect you to projects in your local area. It might come in handy when you’re in a new town for rotation or residency and want to volunteer? Here’s some projects in the DMU area….

A spot of cuteness for your day!

by

As you might know, DMU is not far away from Drake University (& even have a joint dual degree program!) and Drake hosts the relays every year. To kick off relays & celebrate their bulldog mascot, they hold an annual “Beautiful bulldog contest” and we enjoyed it Monday. Here’s a few cute photos I shot for you to ooh & ahh over….

The Bodies exhibit!

by

The human body is a beautiful, amazing thing! I’m always interested to learn more about how it works and what it really all  looks like under the skin. For that reason I’m excited to hear the “BODIES” exhibition is coming to Omaha, which isn’t that far away. It’s an exhibit of real human bodies preserved with polymer for education. The exhibit shows how different health conditions impact anatomy.

I know some DMU students and staff have seen the exhibit in Minneapolis or Kansas City, I think. Have you seen it? What were your thoughts? Will you drive to Omaha to  check it out?

Today's podiatrist

by

A podiatrist is much more than a foot doctor. They perform surgery, treat complications resulting from diabetes and work with sports injuries.

The American Podiatric Medical Association has some good information about what a podiatrist does and how to know when you should see a podiatrist.

Here’s a great video showing what podiatrists do:

Help our local shelters!

by

Saturday has been designated “Shelter Awareness Day” by Iowa’s first lady. This day is designed to remind us all of the constant help needed by our shelters that do so much good. You can sign up to volunteer to help in various ways at VolunteerIowa.com.
