November 19 was Elizabeth Campbell’s birthday and boy did we have a good time. She is one of my classmates and bestest buds. As I have mentioned previously, I love parties…but more than that, love planning surprises. So Lauren (another great friend/classmate) and I got busy scheming away!
Elizabeth’s day started off with coffee from Caribou (always a must), muffins and, best of all, a little clue. That clue sent her to the infamous printer on our floor that sadly takes away all our printer tokens. There she had some other goodies waiting and another clue.

I figure since it’s the day after Thanksgiving most of us are probably too stuffed to think about cooking anything–even if it’s healthy. So instead of offering a recipe today, my recommendation is that you take a break from the kitchen and enjoy spending time with your family and friends this weekend!
How are you spending your long weekend?

Today is a very special day indeed. Not only is it a day off school/work but it’s also a great reminder to truly take time to appreciate all we have and give thanks.
At DMU we are thankful for all our amazing students and graduates. We are thankful for active alumni and supporters. We are thankful for amazing faculty and staff. All the great things we do would not be possible without all off those elements. So, hard-working awesome components of DMU, this is our reminder to you that we are thankful for you.

Today begins the annual Festival of Trees & Lights for Blank Children’s Hospital. Held at the Polk County Convention Complex, this could be a really fun thing to do after you stuff yourself with turkey or go shopping. Maybe a good thing to share with relatives in from another town? If you buy tickets yet today they are $3 at Des Moines area Hy-Vee and Dahl’s stores. If you buy ‘em at the door, they’re $5. Still a good price for a fun festive event that raises money and awareness for the local children’s hospital! Check it out!

I have a crazy obsession with parties/birthdays/celebrations…pretty much anything that includes loads of sugar and free reign to be loud and crazy. So you can only imagine how much I freak when they are surprise parties….and that’s exactly what we got.
Our wonderful faculty threw us a surprise celebration last week for our entire class passing pharmacology and doing so well on our SPAL (standard performance assessment lab) experiences. And many of you may be thinking this is not that big of deal. But let me tell you—pharm is not easy. Plus this year (for the first time) they moved up our standard passing rate by 5% and ALL of us still passed! Whoot, whoot!

Today is Public Health Thank You Day. If you’ve never thought about what public health officials do for you, consider the fact that they are the people who make sure our drinking water is safe, the air we breath is clean and provide vaccines for seasonal flu and other illnesses. Next time you see someone working to promote public health, take a minute to thank them!
