Community Gardens

by

Wouldn’t it be great to grow your own food in your apartment? Seems like I got stung by the gardening bee and have been adding to my balcony garden of goodies. I remember learning about New York’s urban gardening where a plot of dirt is hard to come by so folks use the rooftop of their buildings to grow food.

Medical school grading system?

by

I found this interesting article (requires free registration) about one medical school that changed their grading system to pass/fail and the results are encouraging. Take a look at how students rate their psychological health, their satisfaction with the quality of their medical education and their personal life. So do you think DMU should also adopt this grading system? I vote yes to psychological well-being!

Fire up the grill this weekend and enjoy some grilled turkey tenderloins. The best part about this recipe is it’s super simple. Make the marinade the night before and let the turkey soak up all the good flavors. All you have to do is through it on the grill and enjoy!

Marinade
Juice of 2 limes
1 teaspoon soy sauce
2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
1 crushed clove of garlic
1 teaspoon chopped sage
1 teaspoon chopped thyme
Marinade turkey tenderloins overnight in refrigerator.
Grill tenderloins!

Mmm, tomatoes!

by

easy-pastaSo as I sit here and stare at the delicious collection of cherry tomatoes collected from our neighbor’s plant (we’re plant-sitting for the week), I’m thinking Easy Breezy Pasta for lunch.

This is a super simple recipe to use up tomatoes:

Combine 2 handfuls (or more) of cherry tomatoes + oodles of whole garlic cloves + a drizzle of olive oil + salt + pepper in an oven-friendly container (I use aluminum foil). Bake 20-30 minutes at 350* F. When done, mix in cooked pasta and top with fresh basil.

Yummy!

Coupon clipping is for everyone!

by

Lookie at what I found, coupons online! I’m going to admit our past-time favorite moments is going to include finding great deals in the Val-Pak mail and online deals. It is so fun hunting for bargains that it really should be a sport. And if you cringe at calling this a sport, imagine how I feel about poker being called a sport.

37 days ’til the Iowa State Fair begins! WOOOHOO!! I love our fair.

State Fair screenings, 2008

Mark your calendar for two very special days at the fair – Aug. 15 & 16. These are the days our wonderful clinicians and students will be performing BMI and blood pressure screenings, FREE, in the Farm Bureau tent off the Grand Concourse. We will also have fun giveaways and goodies in this tent.

August 16 is actually Des Moines University Day at the Fair. You’ll find us in a tent on the Grand Concourse giving out pens, frisbees, OMM treatments and the most awesome temporary tattoos you’ll find! The date coincides with our annual DMU alumni reunion so it’s a great time to connect with classmates and colleagues!
