When the U.S. Army celebrated its 234th birthday at the Pentagon on June 12, DMU graduate Colonel Arthur Wittich, D.O., was there to cut the tank-sized cake. He earned the honor as the oldest soldier serving in the Army.
“All the senior Army and Defense Department leaders were there,” he says. “It was pretty exciting.”

Friday Recipes: Salsa and Guacamole
As the newest member of DMU’s marketing and communications team, I wanted to introduce myself, and what better way to get acquainted than with food! I’m a closet foodie. I love watching Top Chef and the Food Network, subscribe to Bon Appétit and can recommend the best restaurants in Des Moines—just ask! That said, by no means am I a gourmet chef, but I appreciate good food and am always up for trying a new recipe.
The Wellness Center is a great resource for healthy recipes. Check out Wellness Central on the portal for more information on past seminars, Weight Watchers on campus and more recipes. Second year DO students can take a nutrition elective.
If you need an excuse to have people over or just want to enjoy your farmer’s market produce, here are 2 easy recipes for salsa and guacamole:

This weekend is one of my FAVORITE Des Moines events – the Arts Festival downtown. It’s so much fun to stroll around and enjoy amazing works of art. I’m so jealous of people with artistic talent and I love to soak in their creativity. There’s also live music, food vendors, crafts for kids and booths to get info on local organizations. This year there’s even a free concert by Gavin DeGraw and Collective Soul.

My dad (lil brother in the background) showing the Christmas gift I got him last year, a chihuahua dressed like Zorro.
It’s not just anybody who will proudly wear a tie with a rubber chicken on it, especially while doing hospital rounds. If you know my dad, however, you would likely not be shocked by such a tie. You wouldn’t even have to see his rainbow trout tie or police line-do not cross tie to know he sometimes colors outside the lines.
