The fair lineup!

by

So the other day I asked, via DMU’s Facebook page, what you’d like to see on our blog. One of my friends in the admissions department, Jean, pointed out that the Iowa State Fair has released their lineup for this summer’s fair. HOLY canoli, how did I miss sharing that news?! I’m glad Jean has my back and reminded me! If you’re a new reader, you may not know this but I LOOOOVE the Iowa State Fair. I look forward to it every year, go several times, see as much as possible & eat every tasty delight they sell, or at least as many as I can stomach each day!

Happy doctors' day!!!

by

steth-heartYay! Today is a day to honor & thank some very important people – doctors. Whether you are one, are in school to be one, go to one or know one – you surely can agree that these are special people. Whether they’re D.O., M.D., Ph.D., D.P.M., D.P.T. or some other, they give of themselves in so many ways for the good of others.

Take the time today or this week to drop a note of thanks to a doctor who was helpful to you or your family. Or just thank one you know.

Iowa rocks!

I’m starting to feel like a broken record (BTW, a “record” for those younger than me refers to those weird round things our parents and grandparents “spun” for tuneage, from what I’m told.) It seems I can’t stop talking about how great Des Moines, Iowa is! But hey I’m just sharin the news, folks, I can’t make this stuff up!

The latest great report is that Congressional Quarterly Press ranked Iowa as the #2 place to live for its quality of life, behind only Wyoming. This is based on education, safety, health and economic development.

Where has that been?

eyeGross! Stick this in your file of ‘things we shouldn’t have to tell you’ and note it!

I’ve witnessed people doing strange things with their eye contacts…by strange I mean sticking it in their mouth to moisten it and putting it back in their eye! I’ve seen my friends do this – yes, even medical students! When we do things like this as a future health professional, not only is it hygienically unwise but it’s sending our patients the wrong message. If we, as educated medical students, are careless about our health, how would our patients value our expertise?

Historic art right down the street

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that DMU is just 12 blocks away from a renowned art museum. The Des Moines Art Center is less than a mile west of campus on Grand Avenue, yet I rarely visit the museum, despite driving past it every week.

Last night was an exception.  I had the opportunity to head over and listen to a lecture by former Stanford professor and art history expert, Wanda Corn, regarding the famous painting “American Gothic.”
