The deadline for our Doctor of Physical Therapy program is less than one month away! Individuals who want to apply for the class beginning August 2009 must e-submit their application through the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) by 10:50 p.m. (central time) on Thursday, January 15, 2009.
PTCAS can be accessed by visiting www.ptcas.org. For more information about our PT program and the application process, please visit www.dmu.edu/chs/pt. And, as always, let me know if you have questions!

You’re probably looking at this photo thinking, “Why would those people wear such silly sweaters, let alone three of the same?”
Well, those are just three of the 80+ people that attended last night’s Epic Ugly Sweater Party at Impromptu Studio, one of many Tweetups in the Des Moines area that happen pretty regularly. This Tweetup, however, was a bit different, a bit more festive — donations for the Central Iowa Shelter were collected, Jason Walsmith of The Nadas performed and food & beverages were graciously provided by B&B Grocery and Olde Main Brewery. Even Metromix and ABC 5 TV showed up to cover the event!

I do not know much about Roxane Joens-Matre, but with few encounters, it was apparent she enjoyed teaching, which made me enjoy my online class in Social and Behavioral Science with her. She made the time to help many of us on our final project; she organized conference calls to help us sort out our ideas and was always available when I needed her academic advice in the master’s program. Today is a very sad day for many of us connected to her because she died this morning from breast cancer.

I was listening in on the residency forum provided by Sigma Sigma Phi where they rounded up current/graduated residents in different programs. One student asked the panel, “What makes for a bad impression from an interviewee?” The answers not only apply to interviews for residency spots but also for prospective students interviewing for medical school spots.

On Saturday, buy handmade items directly from the artist/crafter/photographer at Craft Saturday on Dec. 6, noon-7, 216 4th St. in Des Moines. This is a regular event. I’ve gone and it’s really fun with great stuff. Check it out!
Enjoy 3+ miles of Christmas lights at Jolly Holiday Lights @ Water Works Park on Fleur Dr. It’s $9 per carload of people and the money goes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. It runs through January 1.

Recently I have been talking with some of my senior undergraduate friends about the medical school application process. A lot of them have submitted through AACOMAS and/or AMCAS and are starting to fill out the secondary forms and schedule interviews. As a veteran of that process, they have come to me asking for advice about what to. To be honest, that kind of advice is rather cursory. The questions I prefer to answer are those regarding taking a year or two off before medical school.
