Some great resources for families:

Des Moines Families. My favorite Des Moines Families page tells you where/when to find specials for kids at local restaurants.

A list of family fun from Des Moines’ Downtown Community Alliance.

The Register has a networking site for moms with tons of info.

The site, The Nest, has an Iowa message board which could connect you to similar families for new friends.

Shadowing as a second-year D.P.M. student

by

Second-year D.P.M. students at DMU have the opportunity get ahead of the curve now and shadow clinicians on campus before rotations.

I was there yesterday tagging along with the third-years who made it a positive experience for me and the clinicians who, naturally, were happy to teach and answer all of my questions. I spent about three hours in the clinic following various cases such as putting on a wound V.A.C. (contraption that helps heal wounds faster) and post-op surgery follow-ups. They even encouraged me to gain hands-on experience! (I’ll have to leave the details out – if you are a second-year D.P.M., you’ll take this opportunity to find out yourself!) The clinicians, students, and staff were very open about having me up there.

Feet?

by

I’m in my second year of my podiatric education and have found new appreciation for the profession. If you’re not a podiatrist or a podiatry student, you may be thinking, why did I choose the feet? Well this is a mini-story on my initial reaction about podiatry and where it has taken me up to now.

Nearing my last semester ready to graduate with a B.S. in human biology, I had no idea what was next. Would it be pharmacy? Veterinary school? Biotech? A stay at home post-graduate extraordinaire leeching off my parents? All the options were reasonable but I decided to try something new and applied to Temple University’s podiatry internship program (it was a three day exposure to podiatry I found while surfing online).

soooo cheesy!

Lest you think we’re all pork chops & corn on the cob here in Des Moines, this story will remind you’re we also have some superb pizza around town!

One of my personal favorites is Big Tomato Pizza on Ingersoll (dangerously close to DMU!). They serve pizza by the slice late at night and offer creative toppings like chili, asparagus, hot dogs & Doritos! My fave. is their margherita pizza. YUM!!!
