DSM's housing market

by

Yesterday the Today Show had a piece on the top 5 housing markets in the U.S. and that list included Des Moines. Yay! Go us!

The analyst picked great cities where you can make money in the housing market. They called it a friendly city great for young families with a housing market up 6%. That should be re-assuring if you’re thinking of applying at DMU and would want to buy a house here. Our rental market is also quite healthy and diverse so buying isn’t your only option, of course.

Runnin' the race

by

I truly admire people who can commit themselves to running more than a mile. I remember back in middle school that we were only required to run one mile in P.E. so from then on, I never saw that it was necessary to go any further than that. There was a point in my life where I wished to have joined a cross country team. Due to family obligations, I never had the opportunity growing up. Although never athletic, I usually was the second fastest sprinter in my class so I definitely had the spirit when I was much younger. After my parents refused to sign my permission slip to participate in after-school activities, my interest in running faded and overtime, laziness took over. However, today I feel accomplished for running the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Of all the 5K events I’ve ever participated in, this may be the only one I was able to run the whole thing without stopping, whining, complaining or cutting corners.

Admissions team on the move

by

I recently traveled to Iowa State University to visit their
Pre-Med Club, and spoke to more than 60 eager students!
For those of you not familiar with the area, Iowa State is
about 30 minutes north of Des Moines so we see quite a few applicants from their programs and welcome a number of their graduates to DMU each year. For this particular visit, I was able to bring a current student from our D.O. and P.A. program along so they could share their experiences with the ISU students. It was great to see so many interested students turn out to hear me speak. I suppose the offer of free pizza helped increase attendance just a bit.

Tapas review by Tea

by

And in this week’s series of Tea’s Eating Adventures…

Paul, my boyfriend, and I really enjoy exploring new restaurants in Des Moines. This past weekend, we adventured into the modern day concept of tapas (small dishes) at a place called Trostel’s Dish in Clive. Although the term tapas originates from Spain meaning appetizers, Trostel’s features American, European, Asian, Spanish and Latin inspired foods meant to be sampled in smaller portions.

Between the two of us, we shared six different dishes, which included (ranked from yummy to not-so-yummy):

-Tequila Lime Shrimp

Des Moines Marathon

by

The Des Moines Marathon was Sunday and DMU was everywhere!  There were more than 7,000 runners and walkers for this Boston Marathon qualifier, and the weather couldn’t have been better!  While I don’t think I’ll ever run in a marathon (I get sore from playing Wii Tennis), I have cheered on runners before and the atmosphere is so cool! Everyone is so supportive of all the participants—I kind of wish I could have that encouragement all the time.  How cool would it be if every time you were working out people were there telling you ‘good job,’ ‘way to go,’ and ‘keep going, you’re doing great’?  I think I could work out forever.

Pumpkins, apples, ghosts & goblins!

by

I’ll be the first to admit that autumn is not my favorite season. BUT one of my favorite things about the season is picking out a pumpkin and picking apples. It’s cheap entertainment and you get to enjoy the fall colors, bundle up in a sweatshirt and hang out with people you love. What’s better?

Find out about pumpkin patches all over Iowa (we always go to Williamson’s in Ankeny) or where to pick apples (my friend that teaches elementary school kids RAVES about Center Grove)! Other fun stuff for the season: pumpkin carving stencils or Halloween-themed foods.
