DMU has many opportunities for volunteering and outreach around the world, but did you know there are also plenty of opportunities right here in Des Moines?
The Des Moines Art Center is a world-class, critically acclaimed art museum with two locations in Des Moines – the Main Gallery, 4700 Grand (a 5-minute walk west from DMU), and the downtown location, in the Wells Fargo Financial Building, 800 Walnut. The Art Center’s specialty is contemporary art, with a collection that boasts the likes of Jasper Johns, Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol and Georgia O’Keeffe.

For a week and a half this past summer, I took part in Des Moines University’s medical service trip to El Salvador. Twelve other DMU students and ten faculty embarked on this experience with me. Virtually all programs were represented in the trip, with eight second-year D.O.s, a first-year D.O., a PA student, a P.T. student, an M.P.H. student, and me – a D.P.M. With such a great group, this promised to be an amazing trip.

This weekend is big for DMU. Big tents, big crowds, big fun!

Tomorrow is the beginning of our first-ever all-classes, all-colleges unified Reunion. There’s lots of great things planned for alumni and their guests.

On Saturday, bright and early,we’re holding our first 5k race, the DMU Run-Day-Voo! Sign up by midnight tonight or in person Friday, Aug. 8, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Student Education Center Alumni Court or on the day of the race, 5:30-6:20 a.m.

There actually is one annual Des Moines area event that I try to attend every year and every year have a schedule conflict. The sounds of it make my stomach growl with delight and my mouth waters uncontrollably…
This event I’m describing is the Annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival. This event has a 5k run, vendors, art/crafts for sale, a beer garden and other miscellaneous. The best part though….SEVEN TONS OF FREE SWEET CORN! That’s right, free. As in, you can eat fresh, hot, buttery Iowa sweet corn until your tummy hurts. Friday night is shucking time and Saturday at 9:30 a.m., the parade heads through town but the main event begins at 11 a.m. – sweet corn time.
