An update from a first-year D.P.M.

by

Hello everybody, my name is Grahm Bahnson, and this is my first blog, so bear with me! I’m a first year DPM ’11 from Sioux Falls, S.D. It’s exciting thinking that this first year of podiatric medical school is almost over. It’s really true what they say, “…in medical school, you’ll experience some of the longest days and the fastest months…” That’s definitely been my experience. This year has been quite challenging on many levels but also quite rewarding as well.

Just another example of how cool our students are!

This week the local news magazine for 24-35 year olds wrote about being a med student.

The reporter followed Amy, the student in the story, around for a few hours and got to experience our patient simulation lab and OMM.

The reporter, Brianne, blogged about Amy afterward.

Farmers' market time!!!

by

We hear time and again from students that one of their fave. things to do in Des Moines is visit the farmers’ market downtown on Saturday mornings. With fresh, locally grown fruits and veggies, homemade salsa, jams, jellies and pies, farm-raised fresh meat, Iowa’s famous Maytag cheese and wine from Iowa wineries for sale, who can blame them? There really is nothing better than walking around outdoors browsing locally-grown foods, hands full of fresh flowers and hot breakfast.

The market makes for a wonderful breakfast or lunch with hot coffee, delicious pastries, egg burritos, kettle corn, egg rolls, crepes, pizza, smoked meats, freshly baked bread and many other options.

Is grad school do-able with a family?

by

If you’ve been dreaming for years of becoming a doctor or earning your master’s but you’re not sure how more schooling will jive with having a family, worry no more.

At Des Moines University, we have many students with families and try to be as accommodating as possible. At lunch time there are many toddlers and infants in the cafeteria area. Many strollers are parked in the student lounge alongside a student’s spouse here for a visit in the afternoon. Our Wellness Center allows each student to bring one significant other, be it spouse, friend or child over 16. At Halloween, students bring their families in for a costume party. It’s not unusual to have kids of students, faculty or staff attend campus events or swing by for a visit. We are next door to a child care center, Children’s Garden, that gives priority on the waiting list to children of students and staff. There is even a club/group, The Student Advocate Association for spouses/significant others of DMU students.

The profs at DMU

by

Our professors at DMU are great. I was absolutely blown away by the quality professors we have. I came from a University where the teachers came in late or right on time and took off as soon as class finished. It is so different here. They are quality people and they are concerned about every college and each student. They have open door policy whenever they are in their office (I am sure they sometimes regret that after some tests! Just kidding!) They are great and have some fun and unique personalities.

Wooden shoes, tulips and pastries galore

by

About 30-45 minutes from Des Moines is the lovely little town of Pella. Pella was founded by the Dutch and every year residents celebrate their heritage with Tulip Time.

While you may be able to imagine an entire city awash in colorful tulips, there is no way you could begin to imagine the delectable treats and lively entertainment at Tulip Time. The charming historic town square is home to authentic bakeries and meat markets and will host the 6 parades, May 1-May 3, and booths of ethnic goodies. My favorite is the Dutch letter but I love to try new things each year.
