Welcome back!

by

Moving around during the third year of medical school is definitely not any easy job. It’s scary not knowing where you will live or who you will live with or what the city will be like. It has been quite the adventure! I’m ending my third year here, in Des Moines, Iowa, right where my medical school career began. Crazy how the year is coming full circle.

I was in Detroit, Michigan for the last four months rotating in a small community hospital three miles from 8 mile, where Eminem grew up living the hard life. (I have to include that in my description of my Detroit adventures, understandably so.) Detroit was an adjustment at first and later a bittersweet goodbye; coming back to Des Moines has been a welcome delight.

Food festivals in Iowa

I’ve noticed a trend in our DMU blogs. Apparently we are all very food-focused!!! And while I should totally pick a different topic so you, my friendly blog readers, don’t think we all have one-track minds, I’m not going to today. And why you ask? because, yesterday the Des Moines Register did a story on food festivals in Iowa thru the summer.

And let me tell you, I LOVE food festivals. Something about eating fresh, local food outside in the sunshine. Nothin’ better, I say.

Des Moines, Iowa. Yep, Iowa. Des Moines.

I have a magnificent case of writer’s block, which for anyone that truly knows me is absolutely amazing because I’m rarely at a loss for words! Des Moines, Iowa. Writer’s block. Why do I have writer’s block? I shouldn’t have writer’s block. I’ve been thinking about this blog entry for a few weeks. Every time I did something relatively interesting that did not involve grocery shopping, I thought, “I’m so blogging this.” Unfortunately, my mind is a jumbled mess. I apologize, dear reader, for the convoluted nature of this blog entry.

Are you ready for some fooootball!??!!!

Last night was a big night for Des Moines – our new arena football team debuted on home turf.Â
The Iowa Barnstormers play in the AF2 league. Last night was the team’s second game and second loss. But what a fun night!

I have to back up a bit for those of you not from Iowa…. From 1995 to 2000, the Iowa Barnstormers rocked the downtown arena. The much loved team even played in the Arenabowl in ’96 & ’97. Then, due to ownership issues, lease agreement, etc. ad nauseum, the team was sold and moved to New York. Big time bummer for those of us who dig the fast-paced, indoor game.

Random acts for charity

by

Every year the DMU Pediatric Club hosts a Variety Show. This year’s show was April 3. Our students, as usual, were great. They totally put themselves out there, showing off impressive, crazy and random skills. All money raised goes to Shoes That Fit, a charity that provides shoes, coats, clothes and other necessities for local kids.

Check out some of the acts: dancing & whatever this is!

Will Wonders Never Cease?!

This whole medical school thing is a real hoot! Medical students spend time all their time attending lectures, studying notes, reading textbooks, taking tests, practicing “fake patient” interviews, getting certified in this and that, and a multitude of other activities.

I dare you to ask any medical student if they have ever wondered, “Why am I doing all of this?” I can almost guarantee everyone you ask will say yes. I know I questioned my sanity several times while I was struggling through the first two years of medical school, but stick with me…I promise this will end up being an uplifting blog entry!
