Is the U.S. medical care system “resource constrained”?
by Barb Boose
It’s well-documented and well-known that the United States spends more on health care than any other developed nation. Many assume these higher costs are caused by Americans’ widespread over-consumption of medical resources. Similarly, many assume the U.S. has a boundless supply of physicians and hospital service capacity.
Both assumptions are far from being accurate, however. In fact, while the U.S. does spend more on health care, as a percentage of its Gross Domestic Product, than any other country, we have the fewest licensed hospital beds among the top seven developed countries, our physician availability is quite low and our numbers of medical school graduates is comparatively modest. How will we accommodate increased demand from newly insured patients?

PA students pounce the PANCE
We don’t like to brag, but we are continually impressed by our hard-working students.
We just got word regarding the final pass-rate data for the Des Moines University Physician Assistant Class of 2011 on the PANCE exam. Our PA students had a 98% first-attempt pass rate, while the national average was 91%.
Over the past five years, DMU has averaged a 95% first-attempt pass rate on the PANCE, while the national average has been about 93%.

Friday recipe: chicken-sweet potato stir-fry
by Barb Boose
I love those relaxing, unscheduled weekends when I can lazily ponder new recipes over my coffee, trek to the store with a long list of sometimes-unusual ingredients and then devote the time to making my selected concoctions.

Always impressed
As always, we are continually impressed with our students here at DMU.
It was another excellent year for board results for the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery(CPMS) program here at Des Moines University. The class of 2012 sat for Part II of the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Exam earlier in January. The first time pass rate for CPMS was 93% compared to a national first time pass rate of 82%. The Part I first time pass rate reported earlier this year for the class of 2013 was 98% compared to a national first time pass rate of 85%.
