Program, were awarded a $10,000 grant from the Polk County Community Development Program last year. The funding was granted to increase awareness among the African-American population in Des Moines and the surrounding areas of their risk for high blood pressure. Dr. Geletta and his students have been busy doing just that. At-risk individuals have been screened at local businesses and organizations, including barber shops and churches, and then assisted to find medical attention to prevent and control high blood pressure.

The project is in partnership with local community coalition members including the Iowa Department of Human Rights, Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines and the African American Leadership Council. The Polk County Community Betterment Grant Program was designed to provide financial support to non-profit organizations that provide cultural, recreational, educational and human needs services to the citizens of Polk County, Iowa.

Dr. Geletta also provides leadership to his colleagues by heading, along with Rachel Reimer, Ph.D., the public health area of research emphasis group. Four areas of research emphasis were recently named for DMU; public health, movement science, pedagogy in the health sciences, and cardiology sciences.

To see more details of the involvement of this project in the community and all of the screening locations, visit the Des Moines Register article that was recently published highlighting Geletta’ s project, as well as DMU’s impact in the community.

DMU operates under high ethical standards to earn and sustain the trust and respect of the public, research participants and the research community. Its Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee that is mandated by federal law to review and approve all research that involves human subjects. The IRB’s purpose is to protect human subjects’ rights and welfare and support the institution’s research mission. By requiring local review, the federal government requires local responsibility that is both institutional and individual at the level of the investigator.

Recently, Lisa Grant, a third-year podiatric medical student, and R. Tim Yoho, D.P.M., FACFAS, dean of DMU’s College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, submitted an IRB application requesting approval to research his project, “Dissimilarity in Charcot Ankles versus Charcot Midfoot.” Its goal was to identify current bone quality in patients with Charcot, a serious condition that causes weakening of the bones in the foot, by using biomarkers and DEXA scans. With their results, these researchers hope to be able to characterize Charcot types. Also included in the project was a plan to collect blood samples for serum Vitamin D to further evaluate subjects’ bone status.

In reviewing the application, the DMU Office of Research noted the high quality in which this application was put together. Key components that made it stand out included well-developed, specific goals, a clear and concise informed consent document for the participants, and a thorough explanation of the whole project in both scientific and layperson’s terms, each of which are required for the IRB process.

“The application really had an excellent balance of strong science and attention to patient protection,” says Jeffrey Gray, Ph.D., DMU’s vice president for research.

Both Grant and Yoho reported they felt the research process was fairly easy and straightforward. Their first step, as is recommended for all investigators, is to seek funding for the project. Their team sought funding from DMU’s internal funding source and submitted a Research and Grants (R&G) grant application to support that. This application went through a peer review process by the R&G committee. Once that process was under way, the team started on the IRB application.

Grant and Yoho found that the IRB application required much of the same information that was developed for the R&G application. On the components they had questions about, they contacted the Office of Research Compliance Manager Diane Ament, who guides DMU researchers throughout the process whenever needed.

“All our questions were answered adequately, and the turnaround time was impressive,” Yoho says.

One area that can be difficult for scientists is to summarize the project in layperson’s terms; this is needed so that all patients completely understand the project.

“The proposal should be written so that your neighbor can understand the language,” Ament notes.

She praises Yoho’s application for IRB approval. “It’s one of the best I’ve seen since joining DMU,” she says. “All of the questions were thoroughly and carefully addressed, it was easy to understand the progression of the study from recruitment of volunteers to the final steps of data analysis, and all of the necessary attachments – such as the informed consent document and advertisements – were included.”

In working on their informed consent document, Yoho and Grant found collaboration with other faculty members who had completed this process to be especially helpful. They reviewed sample documents to learn what had been used in approved protocols. Informed consent is one of the primary ethical requirements underpinning research with human subjects; it reflects the basic principle of respect for persons. Informed consent assures that prospective human subjects will understand the nature of the research and can knowledgeably and voluntarily decide whether to participate.

When putting together all of their information to create their IRB proposal, Yoho and his colleagues on the Charcot project kept in mind their potential to gain external funding.

“Building a strong foundation within our internal applications, both the IRB and R&G, was what we needed to start down the path of applying for external grant opportunities,” Yoho says.

Grant says completing required training also was helpful in submitting a high-quality proposal. To be eligible to conduct research on DMU’s campus, investigators must complete some training modules relating to the type of research each project entails

“Taking the training gave me much needed guidance I would not have gained elsewhere,” she says.

DMU’s Office of Research is ready to help all University faculty and students in preparing research proposals. Faculty can use Pulse to find forms needed for the application process and also guidance for completing the necessary documents.

The Office of Research is located in Ryan Hall, Room 209; phone, 515-271-1445.

If you aren’t crazy about physical exercise, even at moderate levels, here’s something that might literally change your mind: Brain researchers say exercise is the best thing you can do to benefit your brain and defend against dementia.

Epidemiologist Bryan James of Rush Alzheimer’s DIsease Center in Chicago recently was quoted recently by National Public Radio’s “Shots” health blog that brain decline is not an inevitable aspect of aging. “It’s simply not pre-destined for all human beings,” he said. “Lots of people live into their 90s and even 100s with no symptoms of dementia.”

Your brain is better on exercise.

Further, “Shots” described a study by Art Kramer, a neuroscientist and director of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois, in which he scanned the brains of 120 older adults. Half of the group then started a program of moderate aerobic exercise of 45 minutes of mostly walking, three days a week. After a year, the MRI scans showed the volume of the brains of the aerobic group had actually increased.

Also important to a maintained brain are protecting one’s heart health, keeping one brain active (while evidence of mental exercises’ impact on the brain is less conclusive, Kramer said, such activities can’t hurt), leading an active social life and consuming foods that may help nourish the brain, like omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Given that red wine contains the latter, “Shots” noted, “Kramer jokingly suggests that the best advice might be to join a book group that walks and drinks red wine while talking about the book.”

Umm, where can I sign up for that?

Seriously, do something nice for your noggin today: Grab a friend and go for a walk.

What if you were a scientist who wanted to investigate ways to counter a deadly virus, but the only way you could do so is if you created it?

<img class=" wp-image-10070 " alt="Electron microscope image of H5N1 viruses (gold) in a cell culture. Image: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That was the question that circulated late last week when scientists announced that research on H5N1, an apparently unusually deadly bird flu virus, was going to begin again in some labs. Researchers had voluntarily halted such investigations in 2011, after there was a huge outcry that a deadly pandemic could break out if the mutant virus leaked out of the lab accidentally or if terrorists stole it or made it themselves, reported The New York Times on Friday.

Scientists involved with the research say adequate safety rules are in place to contain the virus. That won’t happen yet in the U.S., which has not released new safety guidelines.

According to The New York Times article, H5N1 does not often infect people, and so far it has rarely spread from person to person. “People who fall ill nearly always have caught it from poultry,” the article noted. “But flu viruses mutate a lot, and the fear has been that H5N1 will somehow become more contagious in humans.”

Studying the virus, research advocates say, will help scientists recognize changes in naturally occurring viruses that are dangerous and could lead to development of more effective vaccines and antiviral drugs.

What do you think? Are these researchers doing important work or playing with fire – or something even more dangerous?

Recent research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association sounds like the perfect post-holiday gift to anyone who resembles Santa a bit more than prior to the season of celebrations: A review of 97 studies involving a combined 2.88 million people on the relationship between body weight and death risk concluded that overall, people who carry a few extra pounds tend to live longer than those who are either normal weight or very obese.

Katherine Flegal of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the review’s researchers, said that people with a body mass index (BMI) under 30 but above normal have a 6 percent decreased risk of death of all causes. “It’s statistically significant,” she told National Public Radio.

Don’t make a beeline to the bon bons yet.

Before you make a beeline to the bon bons, though, the research comes with caveats. People considered obese based on BMI were about 18 percent more likely to die of any cause compared to normal-weight individuals. The review also only considered the link between death and body size; it didn’t include other health measures possibly related to weight. Its focus on BMI led Walter Willett, an epidemiologist with the Harvard School of Public Health, to call the study “really a pile of rubbish,” adding that “no one should waste their time reading it.”

Flegal acknowledges that the study shouldn’t tell people to stop eating healthfully and exercising. “It’s not intended as a call to any kind of action,” she said.

In that sense, the study’s call to action seems to be further study on the impact of weight and lifestyle on people’s health.

The 2012 Des Moines University Research Symposium was held December 6, 2012. It was another successful year with a great turnout! This year the number of attendees kept steady at 152, the exact number as the previous year’s symposium in 2011. The Office of Research is happy to report that the total number of presentations increased from 52 poster and oral presentations in 2011 to 63 in 2012. A new award component was implemented this year and was very well-received. Awards were given in six categories including both the oral and poster presentations.

There was also a large increase in the number of students participating in the Mentored Student Research Program that presented their research. This year 23 students presented either an oral or poster presentation at the symposium compared with 16 in 2011 and an even lower total, 9, in 2010. Dr. Jeff Gray stated that he is particularly excited about the number of students that presented at the symposium and is confident it will continue to increase in the years to come. He also commented that he was impressed with the number of residents that presented and he hopes to increase their participation, also, in the future. Seventeen residents co-authored poster presentations at the symposium this year.

More information about the award winners in each category can be seen here.
