Blizzard bags

January 25, 2011 —

Everyone likes to wear jeans to work and everyone likes to help others in the community. This month DMU employees can do both, in combination! The Community Service Committee is selling casual day stickers in trade for items to put in blizzard bags. All the needed items are listed on the portal on the community service page.

Now what’s a blizzard bag you may ask. A blizzard bag is delivered to local Meals on Wheels recipients unable to leave their house that would be in trouble if inclement weather prevented the Meals on Wheels folks from getting there. The bags include peanut butter, applesauce, hot chocolate, tuna, crackers and microwaveable meals. Isn’t that a great idea?

So if you’re an employee who’d like a sticker, or a student/University friend who wants to support the project, talk to Melissa Wilder, Lindsay Buechler or Annette Benjamin.

Courtney Tompkins has been part of the DMU marketing team since Nov. 2005 and loves promoting a school she believes in so thoroughly. Proud daughter and patient of DMU alumni, Courtney knows, first-hand, that Des Moines University is doing a world of good. A fan of all outdoor festivals, fruity drinks and nearly all edibles, she has a hard time narrowing down her list of favorite places to go and things to do but lists the Iowa State Fair as an all-time fave. She loves her 8-minute commute to DMU from Urbandale, a suburb of Des Moines. She and husband Tyler are owned by three large dogs, Tonka, Tucker and Tank.

That is a fantastic idea. We clearly do not have a need for it where I am living now in Florida but I am going to suggest it to friends going to school at NYU. What a wonderful way to give back.
