Why did you choose DMU?

I chose DMU because of its outstanding reputation. I wanted the best podiatric medical education available. DMU had the facilities, faculty, curriculum, board pass rates and residency placement to convince me that they were the best. Additionally, the extra amenities like the wellness center, game room and student lounge make the campus an enjoyable place to learn.

Were you surprised by anything in the program?

I was surprised by the amount of information we covered in such a short period of time. However, at DMU, the students are willing to help each other and I have not witnessed the competitive mentality that exists at other medical schools. The students are always willing to share notes, study guides and any helpful information with each other. The faculty and TA’s are also there to give you all the additional help you need.

Any advice for prospective students?

Just try to have fun whenever you can. School can be stressful and demanding so it is important to make time for you.

Extracurricular activities/club involvement at DMU:

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved. The large number of clubs offered at the school will make it hard to choose which ones to attend. I am involved in three podiatric clubs on campus (sports medicine, orthopedic medicine, and the surgery club). I am also the class treasurer. There are also great extracurricular activities to get involved in like the Malpractice Bowl which was a lot of fun!

Career objectives:

My ideal job would be working with an orthopedic group.

Other: (anything else you’d like to share about yourself or your journey to DMU!)

Moving from a big city like San Antonio I was not sure what life would be like in Des Moines. After I got settled and I ventured out into the local community, I realized there were plenty of fun things to do in Des Moines like attending sporting events, restaurants, shopping, and participating in numerous recreational activities. The Iowa State Fair is a definite must! Who can say no to a deep fried snickers? Additionally, the people of Des Moines are some of the friendliest you will encounter anywhere. I could not be happier with my decision to attend DMU.
