Matt German, D.P.M.'12
Hometown: Lakeville, MN
Undergrad School: University of Minnesota
Major: Chemistry
Age: 24
Class: Doctor of Podiatric Medicine – Class of 2012
Were you surprised by anything in the program?
How different it is from undergrad. The material is thrown to you quickly, and you have to be prepared for it.
Any advice for prospective students?
Make sure to go over the day’s lectures as soon as you get home, it really helps you recall the material when studying for the exam.
What do you do when you’re not studying?
Anything I can be doing! Going to movies, going to watch the Iowa Cubs or the Chops or just grilling and hanging with friends. We try to go golfing as often as possible during the season.
Why do you want to be a doctor of podiatric medicine?
I wore orthoses for about 6 years growing up, and that peaked my interest. When shadowing doctors in undergrad, I loved the patients and the cases the podiatrist was seeing. He let me shadow him in the OR multiple times, and was always making sure to help me understand what was going on. He really motivated me into pursuing my D.P.M.
Why DMU?
It’s a great school! I interviewed here and I loved the campus. All the resources they have here are amazing, and I was just psyched as soon as I got to tour campus. It’s also (relatively) close to home, so that is a plus as well.
Career objectives:
I would love to be working in the inner city, hopefully doing a lot of trauma and wound-care.
Favorite thing about Des Moines:
I love how it has the amenities of a city, but it has a small town feel to it. You can run into someone you know at any time. I also love how nature friendly it is, with all the trails and parks.
