Director - Student Counseling Center
Dr. Martin has more than 20 years of experience as a therapist, with more than 16 of those years at DMU, assisting students with study and test-taking strategies, time management, and all other aspects of acclimation to a very fast-paced and often stressful curriculum! Before beginning at DMU, Dr. Martin served as a therapist at Blank Children’s Hospital, supervised a variety of different programs at Lutheran Social Services of Iowa, was Director of the Mercy Pediatric Clinic, and also designed and served as director of the Mercy Child Development Center. She received Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University and a B.S. degree from the University of Nebraska. In addition to maintaining a private practice on weekends and evenings, she has also served on the Iowa Physician Health Committee for more than five years, a committee of the Iowa Board of Medicine, which addresses the needs of impaired physicians. Dr. Martin uses a Brief/Systems approach to therapy and believes students must have a safe place to come with issues that might prevent them from recognizing their potential. Her specific interests include managing stress, issues of social justice, relationship counseling, LGBTIQ affirmative counseling, emotional wellness and hypnosis. Dr. Martin also serves as advisor to SOS, a great group for significant others of DMU students.
