Why do you want to be a physical therapist?
I enjoy helping people and I love to see people make the improvements that they do through therapy. I was able to watch a young girl go from not being able to walk to walk by herself within 4 years. It’s amazing what physical therapy can do for a person.
My main reason for coming to DMU was the manual therapy emphasis. I also was interested in doing the dual degree (DPT/MHA) program.
I would like to work in either pediatrics or geriatrics.
I like to go to Smokey Row and enjoying a cup of coffee or bread bowl, I also like going shopping with friends and playing Just Dance 3 on the Wii.
Favorite thing about Des Moines:
Des Moines is such an active community and no matter what the weather is like, there is also something to do! I like my favorite is doing stuff at Grey’s Lake or going to the Civic Center for a play.
What do you do when you’re not studying?
I love to just relax and my apartment and catch up on my sleep!
Were you surprised by anything in the program?
I didn’t fully realize how much time and effort the program actually took until you get busy with anatomy and neuroanatomy at the same time.
Any advice for prospective students?
Get your observation hours in! Do a lot during the summer because you are not doing anything then anyways. Make sure to observe in different settings. Ask questions of the therapist that you are shadowing. Make sure to review your anatomy before it actually starts and keep up with the material during the block, try not to leap frog. Make sure that during the interview, the faculty member can see that you really want to be at DMU.
