Hometown: Urbandale, IA
Undergrad School: University of Iowa
Class: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine - Class of 2014
Were you surprised by anything in the program?
I have been very impressed with the level of commitment from the DMU staff to help students with the transition to medical school.
Any advice for prospective students?
I would strongly recommend visiting the campus and talking with current students in order to get a feel for the culture of the university.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Always treat others with love and compassion.
Why do you want to be a doctor of osteopathic medicine?
My nursing education and experience has instilled the importance of treating the whole person and I have seen firsthand the success that can be attained by utilizing this model. I also believe strongly in the importance of seeking balance through personal management of nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress and other factors that impact us on a regular basis.
My favorite activity is spending quality time with family and friends but I also love biking, playing volleyball, and checking out a good movie.
There are many reasons I chose DMU but most important was that I felt “at home” during my campus visit as everyone was extremely welcoming and strived to make my visit a quality experience. In addition, I was impressed with the level of technology and its integration in practical applications.
I hope that one day medical providers will be able to deliver care not in offices but out in our communities, in the homes, schools and workplaces of our patients. There would be no disparities and no restrictions to accessing care.
Favorite thing about Des Moines:
I love to go cycling on the great bike trails that are located all over the city, particularly on a beautiful spring, summer or fall day!
