The College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University was the first school of podiatric medicine to be affiliated with an academic health science center. The uniqueness of this alliance provides many educational and resource advantages, not to mention the opportunity for developing inter-professional relationships with other future health care providers.

Graduates have a distinct advantage because they have been trained as physicians first and specialists second. This philosophy is woven throughout our curriculum. In fact, the first-year basic science curriculum is taken with the osteopathic medical students.

As one might expect, student outcomes confirm our commitment to the curriculum. Student performances on national board and licensure exams have consistently been well above the national average. All graduates over the past several years have been selected into multi-year surgical residency programs. Dating back to 1997, graduates of CPMS have consistently performed above the mean in the total score and in all components of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery board certification written exam. This seamless process of handoff points creates opportunities for our students to be successful when they begin to practice. This is the measure we are most proud of.

These are just a few examples of how the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery serves as the educational model for podiatric medical education and offers the finest podiatric medical education in the nation.
