DMU Voluenteer

DMUY Voluenteer at Perkins Elementary School

Des Moines University's employees and students are committed to making the community a better place to live. With the guidance of the DMU Community Service Committee, the University has the opportunity to come together in an organized effort to make an even greater impact in the community.

Perkins Elementary School

The Des Moines University and Perkins Elementary School partnership began in 2002 as a part of a community service initiative to assist the school financially as well as to offer educational opportunities. The partnership works to meet the changing needs of the school, focusing on varying issues from year to year. This year, DMU purchased school supplies and library books at the request of school officials. DMU is also implementing a reading/math mentoring program for employees to assist at the school. In the past two years, the University has purchased school supplies, backpacks, coordinated field trips and assisted with the school's health classes.

Theodore Roosevelt High School

The Des Moines University and Theodore Roosevelt High School partnership began in 2004. It is in its infancy but some programs are already underway. This year, DMU has started printing and paying for the monthly Roughrider newsletter sent to family, friends and community boosters. The University also donated 25 computers and 2 LCD projectors. DMU is also working on implementing a reading/math mentoring program for DMU employees to assist at the school and developing ways for DMU faculty to assist Roosevelt science faculty in the classroom or through field trips to the University.
