Community Service

Des Moines University's employees and students are committed to making the community a better place to live. With the guidance of the DMU Community Service Committee, the University has the opportunity to come together in an organized effort to make an even greater impact in the community.

Volunteerism

DMU is committed to promoting volunteerism - faculty, staff and students are actively encourage to "Do a World of Good" in the community. In fact, paid community service leave is available for all employees to serve up to 40 hours per year in approved community service activities in the areas of education, poverty, and health. Nonprofit organizations can request DMU employees' assistance through the Employee Volunteer Program, called Reach-Out DMU.

In addition, the DMU Community Medicine program provides several free health services to the community. DMU medical and health sciences students and faculty donate their professional expertise at events such as health fairs and first aid tents. Organizations may request volunteers to conduct health screenings and assessments, provide resources and education, and assist with improving health, wellness and lifestyle choices.

Organizations must apply for DMU assistance through employee volunteer program or the community medicine program. Review the complete Community Service/Community Medicine 2010 Project Application.

If your organization does not qualify for direct assistance, you can request to have your volunteer opportunities advertised to the DMU community.

In-kind Giving

For the benefit of the community, the University strives to make its resources available. Qualifying nonprofit organizations may use our facilities for community events occurring after 5 pm, on the weekend, or during a university break. Request an in-kind award.

Education/Outreach

Through Community Education, DMU offers presentations and workshops on medical and health issues. While some programs expose attendees to the medical profession, others empower community members to take charge of their own health. Sign up to receive announcements of our outreach programs that are open to the public at DMU News and Events. If you have a specific education/outreach request for your organization, make a inquiry to see if DMU can help.

Partnerships

The University comes together in an organized effort to make a lasting impact in the community through partnerships with the Des Moines Public School District, WesleyLife, and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Des Moines.
