Medicine + the media:  How docs are depicted - February 6, 2007

Gary Hoff, D.O., FACOI, FACC is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Medical Humanities at Des Moines University. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree from Oklahoma State University and Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Oklahoma College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Hoff completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine where he also completed a Cardiology Fellowship. He is board certified in both Cardiology and Internal Medicine.
 
 In addition to his clinical practice and clinical education, he also offers courses in the History of Medicine and Medicine and the Arts. Most recently, he organized the Department of Medical Humanities of which he is chairman.


Best foot forward: From chiropody to medical specialists - February 13, 2007

Robert "Tim" Yoho, D.P.M., M.S., FACFAS is a professor of Podiatric Medicine, Dean of the College of Podiatric Medicine & Surgery and the Vice President for Academic Administration of Des Moines University.  His educational background includes a BA degree from Grove City College, a Master of Science degree in microbiology from Duquesne University and Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. 

Dr. Yoho completed his residency training at Riverside Hospital, Toledo, Ohio and worked as a private practitioner for seven years in western Pennsylvania.  He joined Des Moines University in the College of Podiatric Medicine, was appointed Dean of that program in 1997 and Vice President for Academic Administration in 2002.  Dr. Yoho is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and is a Fellow in the American College of Foot & Ankle surgeons.


Emergency:  From hearse to helicopter - February 20, 2007

Larry J. Baker, D.O. is the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Iowa Lutheran Hospital.  His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa and Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of Des Moines University.  Dr. Baker completed his internship at Normandy Osteopathic Hospital in St. Louis and his Family Practice residency at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

He is board certified in Family Practice and Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Emergency Physicians.  Dr. Baker currently serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Des Moines University.


Flea bites and birds:  The great epidemics - February 27, 2007

Patricia Quinlisk, M.D., M.P.H. is the Medical Director and State Epidemiologist at the Iowa Department of Public Health.  Her educational background includes training as a clinical microbiologist (MT(ASCP), a Masters of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University and Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Wisconsin.  She has extensive experience and training as a field epidemiologist in the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Intelligence Service.  Dr. Quinlisk regularly lectures at the University of Iowa, the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse and Iowa State University.

She is also an active lecturer in Europe and at institutions throughout the Midwest.  Dr. Quinlisk serves on numerous boards and committees related to public health and infectious disease and is currently an editor of the Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal.


The eyes have it: Barbaric to high tech- March 6, 2007

George Clavenna, D.O. M.P.H. FAOCOOHNS is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Des Moines University.  His educational background includes Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Wayne State University and Doctor of Osteopathic degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Michigan.  Dr. Clavenna completed his rotating internship and residency in general ophthalmology at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital Bi-County Hospital of Highland Park/Warren, Michigan.

Dr. Clavenna has extensive university and professional service activities and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology among others.  He has been a member of the Des Moines University faculty since 1986.


The cutting edge:  Surgery in war and peace - March 13, 2007

Kendall Reed, D.O., F.A.C.O.S. is Professor of Surgery and Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of Des Moines University.  He received his medical training at the Kansas City University College of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, his residency in General Surgery at the Brooke Army Medical Center and a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the University of Minnesota.  Dr, Reed is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Osteopathic Surgery. 

Dr. Reed has a special interest in cancer research.  Currently he is affiliated with the Katzman Breast Center and Mercy Surgical Affiliates, Mercy Medical Center.  In 2002 - 2003, Dr. Reed served as President of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.  He has been Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine since 2003.
