The Health Careers Exploring Post 141 program is sponsored by the Des Moines University and The Boy Scouts of America.  Youth who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) or 15 through 20 years old have the opportunity to explore many different areas of the medical field through hands-on activities, lectures, and field trips.  The purpose is to help young people identify the field of medicine that most appeals to them.  To do this, experts introduce their specialty.  Doctors in Oncology, Plastic Surgery, OB/GYN, Family Practice, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics; Physical Therapists, Physician Assistants and many more, visit the Post members to discuss their personal experiences in medicine and give them hands on experience in their fields of expertise.

In addition to learning from the experts, the Post members are able to spend time with volunteer DMU medical students who act as mentors/facilitators.  The medical students answer questions, share their personal experiences, give a tour of the medical school, and encourage the students to fulfill their aspirations in the medical field.

Bi-weekly meetings are scheduled at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesdays, usually the second and fourth Tuesday evening of the month.   Leadership opportunities abound; officers are elected and are responsible for the majority of the programming of the Post activities.  Local and National Awards can also be earned, and a community service project is held to raise money for a local charity each year.  Information about National student grant opportunities is also available.
