Clinical Rotations
During the third year, each student does a series of core hospital rotations. Each rotation is four weeks in length and the location of the core hospital for every student is assigned according to a lottery system.
Core hospital and clinic preceptors are experienced physicians who are Board Certified in their specialty. All preceptors have clinical appointments at DMU and are responsible for guiding each student in learning clinical practice in their specialty.
During the fourth year of medical school, most of the time is taken in completing electives. Many students will elect rotations that provide experiences in subspecialties that can lead to postgraduate education and in areas of the country where residencies are offered to students when they graduate. These electives are usually four or two weeks and students can travel during the year. Many of the hospitals or clinics provide help in finding housing during these shorter stays.
