Body composition utilizing DXA is a relatively new technology that is very accurate and precise. It is a painless procedure requiring the person to lie still for the scan which takes a few minutes.
Body composition is the ratio of lean body mass to fat body mass. Too much fat can lead to health problems like heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, some joint diseases and other serious conditions.
Some research suggests that excessive accumulation of fat at specific body sites may be an important health risk factor (Wilmore, Buskirk, DiGirolamo & Lohman, 1986). For instance, it appears that extra fat around the abdomen and waist is associated with higher risk of diabetes, heart disease, and hyperlipidemia (Len Kravitz, Ph.D & Vivian H Heyward, Ph.D)
DXA acquired Body Composition is the new gold standard as it provides not only the total fat mass and total lean mass, but also fat and lean mass for different areas of the body such as each arm and leg and the trunk.
The previous gold standard was Hydrodensitometry Weighing (underwater weighing). This method measures whole body density by determining body volume. Many people find this method difficult, cumbersome and uncomfortable, and others are afraid of total submersion or cannot expel all the air in their lungs.
Body composition requires an order from your physician. Reason to consider having your body composition measured include:
- To develop a complete physical fitness profile
- To monitor body fat loss and muscle growth from exercise
- To provide a baseline for nutritional counseling and treatment of obesity
- To maximize the performance of athletes
