Record Patient Census

The DMU Foot and Ankle Institute set new records for total patient visits and new patients for 2009. Total patient visits exceeded 7,500 and nearly 1,300 new patients were seen by the clinicians at the Des Moines University Clinic.

The abstracts for the winning scientific posters at the 2009 American Podiatric Medical Association's National Scientific Meeting held in Toronto were published in the January/February 2010 edition of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association. Faculty Receive ABPS Certification

Congratulations to Dr. John Bennett and Dr. Jill Frerichs for achieving Board Certification Status in Foot Surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS). Both were successful in completing the case study-oral examination section of the certification process administered in Chicago in June.

On June 26th Dr. Pehde lectured in California on the EZ Frame external fixation device that allows stability in the foot and ankle but without the need of putting pins or screws in the tibia.

The Des Moines University Foot and Ankle Institute had a record number of patient visits (7,329) and new patients (1,226) for the 2008-09 fiscal year. DMU Foot and Ankle Institute clinicians also see patients at Pella Regional Medical Center, the Iowa Methodist Wound Center and Adair County Hospital. The Foot and Ankle Institute is the largest group of podiatric physicians in the state and provides clinical training to students in the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.

Dr. Kevin Smith successfully completed the 2009 diplomate foot surgery recertification examination administered by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (APBS). Podiatric physicians are required to recertify every ten years.

DMU offers free foot clinic at Polk County Health Department

Students from DMU's College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery and physicians from the DMU's Foot & Ankle Institute will provide foot assessments, simple treatments and diabetes-screenings December 16, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the Polk County Health Department, 1907 Carpenter Ave. in Des Moines. They will also offer foot braces, shoe inserts or referrals for further care if necessary.
The care is free with no qualifications for participants. There are a limited number of patient slots so you are encouraged to call 515-287-3798 for a timeslot.
Whether you need your annual diabetic foot exam, have pain in your feet or fungus problems, the DMU docs and students will be happy to help.

Dr. Mahoney, along with several students from the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, provided lower extremity vascular screenings and ABI testing (ankle-brachial index.)

Volunteer Project for the Foot & Ankle Institute

Since May, the faculty, students and staff of the Foot & Ankle Institute are volunteering at the Polk County Health Department Free Clinic. Once a month, one or two of our clinicians along with a few students evaluate and screen patients at their diabetic foot clinic. The patients are primarily Hispanic with no access to health care. Because our doctors' willingness to volunteer, the Polk County Health Department was able to start offering these services to their diabetic patients.

Dr. Collin Pehde attended the, "Advanced Reconstructive Skills in the Foot and Ankle Surgery Seminar" held in Las Vegas on February 15-16. The course was offered to select podiatric physicians and focused on flatfoot reconstruction, internal and external fixation, and Graft Jacket dermal matrix for foot and ankle wounds.

These representatives of the DMU Foot and Ankle Institute participated in a multicenter wound healing clinical trial. The manuscript, "Comparison of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy Utilizing Vacuum-Assisted Closure to Advance Moist Wound Therapy in the Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers-A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial," acknowledged Des Moines University's participation. The study is scheduled for publication in the April issue of the journal Diabetes Care.
