Admission Requirements
To qualify for admission to the Master of Public Health Program, applicants must:
- Have a baccalaureate degree (in any field) from a regionally accredited college or university.
- A GPA of 3.0 is recommended but a strong applicant with a GPA below 3.0 may be considered.
- Provide all necessary application materials to the satisfaction of the Admission Committee.
- Experience in the field of public health is a plus.
- There are no specific courses required for admission into the MPH program.
Individuals can apply for admission throughout the year. Students may take up to six credit hours of course work before being formally admitted.
Technology and Computer Use
Technology is incorporated throughout the program to support your education. We call this connected learning. It's an ongoing process of discovery and innovation that blends the Internet, hardware, and software in ways that benefit you on campus and when taking online courses. Here are some of the components:
- Wireless Access points connect you to the University's computer network and Internet anywhere on campus without cables or data ports.
- he student portal is your gateway to web-based services. You can view your grades, class schedule, e-mail inbox, and access other services and information through just a few customizable pages.
- A popular web-based system called Blackboard give you access to course material, quizzes, discussion lists, and other services.
Technology Requirements
You should have:
- A personal computer (Pentium or equivalent) with Windows XP
- Minimum of 256 MB RAM, CD Drive, and audio capability is required.
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or above.
- Modem with a minimum of 56 K connectivity speed.
- Internet access through an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- Ability to access plug-in resources for course work, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0.
- Word processing, spreadsheet, and slide presentation software comparable to Microsoft Office.
The web-based instructional system is compatible with Macintosh computers. Students who use them, however, may need to save their word processing documents or presentations in a format that is compatible with the current Microsoft Office Suite for the PC. Macintosh users may find that some of the functions within the DMU Student Portal are limited. Des Moines University offers limited technical support for Macintosh users.
Computer Competencies
You should be able to:
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of word processing.
- Demonstrate fluency with Windows XP operating system. This is demonstrated by the ability to file, save, retrieve, and manipulate documents within the system.
- Access, file, and respond to e-mail.
- Log onto the Internet with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
- Navigate the Internet, including the World Wide Web (www), using the appropriate browser.
- Attach, receive, and send files/documents to others; download and open files sent to students.
- Conduct an Internet search.
Non U.S. Citizens
Applicants who are permanent residents of the U.S. will be required to provide a copy of their permanent resident card ("green card") prior to matriculation.
Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents should review the information for international students.
