Our mobile clinic

by Courtney Tompkins

Have you seen the big green machine? It’s our new mobile clinic!

It’s yet another way we’re providing health outreach to our community. Our Homeless Camp Outreach group uses it and our friends at Free Clinics of Iowa use it as well. Read more in today’s Register!

You will see it on Saturday at the Flatland Kids Triathlon in West Des Moines in case of any injuries, overseen by a grad and staffed by Des Moines Fire & Rescue.

DSM: healthy & safe

by Courtney Tompkins

A new Gallup & Healthways survey scored 187 metro areas and rated the Des Moines/West Des Moines area at #3 on the top ten safe & healthy place list. The survey factored in violent and property crime rates, as well as access to 13 basic needs like fresh fruit and veggies, shelter, clean water and health care.

Yay for the city I love! Way to stay healthy & safe!

An intro to CHS Alumni Association!

by CHS Alumni Association

Welcome to the first official blog from the College of Health Sciences Alumni Association. Many of you may not know about our group, so I thought I would make the introduction. Our Alumni Association is a comprised of all the College of Health Sciences programs and many functions are collective activities with students &/or staff and faculty. We are still new ‑ we started only a few years ago and the word is still spreading to all of alumni, so share the word and connect your classmates to us! The CHS association is designed to support the College’s mission and be a liaison between alumni and current students. If you are interested in finding out more, visit www.dmu/alumni.

How health reform affects you

by Andrea Cooley

The health reform act signed by President Obama on March 30 is a hot topic whether you’re a clinician, a student or a patient. If you are wondering what it means for you, we found some documents that do a good job of summarizing the facts.

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) provides a good overview of what is of interest for doctors and medical students in the bill here. It includes information about incentive payment for primary care, Medicaid, graduate medical education, teaching health centers, prevention and wellness, workforce provisions, Title VII reauthorization, primary care extension program, national health service corps, rural health and research.

The bill also deals with federal financial aid program. Read what AACOM says about student loan reform revisions.
