Adam Lang, a third-year CPMS student, wrote this article on diabetes! So if you see him around campus, give him a high-five for representing our profession and our college. You can also find more podiatric articles at this website so surf around at your leisure and learn about the profession.
(Picture: And yes, he loves to eat too!)

Check out the anatomy lab!
Have you ever gone on a campus tour and felt like you didn’t really get to see the heart and guts of the school? We don’t want that to happen at DMU. We also don’t want you to visit and leave without every question answered. So if you’re thinking you want to enter the health care field (or your child or student does), then come check out Discover DMU on March 3.
It’s informal yet informative and you’ll get to see where students really learn and grow. You’ll hear about all 9 of our programs and go on a tour with a current student to our labs and classrooms and gym and all the other cool stuff that makes DMU awesome.
You’ll get to:
Come with questions! Our students are amazing and they are happy to share their experiences.

Believe it or not, just 5 minutes of walking in this freezing weather can be exceptionally dangerous for your feet if they are not well protected.
Did you know that people who have itchy, burning, painful feet may actually not have oft-heard-of athlete’s foot but actually something called chilblains? After being in the cold for no longer than 5 minutes at a time, even just walking to the car and to school, you may experience early symptoms of potential frostbite.
So what should you do to control the pain? It would seem practical to dip your freezing feet in a tub of hot water or let them sit under a heater but this may actually aggravate the pain. What you want to do is to slowly, emphasis on slowly, warm up your feet with socks and blankets. It is best to see your podiatric doc (we have several at the DMU Foot and Ankle Institute) so they can evaluate the severity and educate you on protecting your feet during this nasty cold weather.
Stay safe!

DMU has teamed up with Variety-The Children’s Charity to host a new annual event: Dodgeball Derby @ DMU. If you’ve ever played dodgeball or seen the movie “Dodgeball,” you know this event will be fun. And when you consider that costumes and themed-teams are encouraged, you can imagine the riot this will be.
Variety is a great organization that helps underprivileged or at-risk kids around our state.
So mark your calendar for January 23, 8-5, at DMU and sign up your team now! Each team of 6-8 people costs $75 and that includes a t-shirt for each player.
Prizes will be awarded for the best playing team, most creative team and best costume. (Also, Variety is lining up some corporate sponsors so if you want in on that, email Melissa.Hoover@dmu.edu.)
Thanks to the DMU American Association of Podiatric Sports Medicine club for heading this up!

The clock is ticking 'til graduation...
Well, for me anyway. I’ve always enjoyed going wherever the wind blows and making the most of new experiences. But the month of October was really tense when my applications were sent to various programs and the only thing I could do from then on is wait idly by my email waiting for a response.
So how do rotations work for DMU D.P.M. students? The first two years of our education is all classroom work. We take classes with our fellow D.O.s in the first year, we might even see them in our second year, but by third year, most of them are out on rotations. For D.P.M.s, we stay in Des Moines for third-year rotating with our very own faculty on campus, and travel to the VA, local hospitals, Pella, Greenfield, etc., for additional exposure. By now, we have already split up into groups of 8-10 students that we will have the opportunity to get very comfortable with. We do have classes in our third year including Community Health, Problem Based Learning, Trauma, among others. What I liked about that is I still see my classmates.

A list of top jobs by CNN Money recently included physician assistants, physical therapists and physicians. Luckily we can help you get into those fields! CNN Money also picked physical therapist as the #2 least stressful job, based on a survey of the career field.
Here’s our pages for each of those programs. Be a… physical therapist, physician assistant, osteopathic doc or podiatric doc! Let us know if we can answer any questions!
