Busy, busy weekend!

by Courtney Tompkins

You have NO excuse for not having fun this weekend. There’s tons to do around town PLUS Saturday is the 5k at DMU. You can show up early & sign up if you don’t get a chance to do it online.

Sunday is my favoritest day ever — DMU day at the Iowa State Fair. YAY!!!! Find us on the Grand Concourse in a tent with FREE blood pressure screenings, awesome temporary tatts and a giant standup photo prop to stick your head in!

Even if you don’t hit the fair on Sunday (and why wouldn’t you!?) you HAVE to make plans to check it out, at least for an evening. It’s so fun to people-watch, grab some food-on-a-stick and check out all the animals, veggies & cool stuff!

Let’s get oriented…

by Courtney Tompkins

Welcome to campus! We promise you’ll figure out where everything is soon and be able to ditch the map & compass. We’re not a very huge campus, plus everyone’s friendly so feel free to ask a passer-by if you’re not quite sure where you’re headed.

There’s lots to see & do & learn over the next few weeks. Soak it up & feel free to shout at us if you have questions. Mark your calendar for August 12, it’s Club, Event & Organization Day in the MEC and you’ll want to check that out.

Check out our Facebook page, Twitter account and, of course, the student portal for more about what’s going on around campus.

Welcome to Des Moines!

by Andrea Cooley

Orientation for osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine, physical therapy, anatomy and biomedical science students starts August 3, and the physician assistant students have been in class since the beginning of June, so campus is starting to get busy! If you are just moving to Des Moines and getting settled into a new city, here are some links to help you find your way around:

Employment: School is pretty much a full-time job, but if you moved with a spouse or significant other who’s looking for a job check out DesMoinesHelpWanted.com and Iowa Workforce Development. There are some campus jobs for students here.

Podiatry preview

by Andrea Cooley

If you’re interested in applying to medical school or pursuing a career in health care the best way to get a feel for a school or program is to visit the campus and ask a lot of questions. For the next 2 days, Des Moines University is hosting 8 undergraduate students for the 2nd annual Podiatry Preview.

Students applied from schools all over the country. We chose students from: University of the Incarnate Word, Pepperdine University, Simpson College, Penn State University, Brigham Young University, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, College of William and Mary and Brown University.

They will  learn more about the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine program, tour the DMU Foot & Ankle Institute and meet current D.P.M. students.

Welcome! We hope you love campus as much as we do. Let us know if we can help with anything.

Happy summer!

by Andrea Cooley

Today is officially the first day of summer! June 21 is the summer solstice, the day when the earth is tilted closest to the sun. That means it is also the longest day of the year with 15 hours of daylight.

To kick off the next 3 months here’s a list of 10 things to do while the sun is shining and the days are long.

1. Des Moines Art festival June 25-27, this 3-day annual event is a favorite. Learn more about the featured artists later this week.

2. Nitefall on the River What’s not to like about an outdoor concert? Every Thursday night through July head to the Simon Estes Riverfront Amphitheater shows start at 7 p.m. and tickets start at $12. Artists include Barenaked Ladies, Vertical Horizon and Ingrid Michaelson.

3. Iowa State Fair August 12-22. Whether you go for the animals, the art, the people watching, food on a stick or DMU Day at the Fair August 15, it’s fun for the whole family.
