Health & medical book sale

by Courtney Tompkins

Get thee to the State Library on Thursday or Friday (June 3-4)!

The state medical library closed in March and they’re selling medical books and journals! The state library is in the Miller Building, 1112 E. Grand Ave., and is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Visitor parking just north of the building and one block east.

Hardbacks are $2, paperbacks $1, journals are 10 cents, health videos are $1. You can also negotiate to buy entire runs of journals. The sale is first-come, first-served. No credit cards. Bring cash/check and your own bags/boxes. Some items are already gone but you can check the catalog ahead of time for what they have/had.

Of course you shouldn’t worry about losing access to a great medical library because the DMU Library is still here for you! It’s a great resource & study spot for students, plus it’s open to the public. It’s considered a National Library of Medicine Resource Library and has a 26,000+ medical book collection, has 35,336 volume-bound journals plus gets 600 journal & newsletter subscriptions!

How health reform affects you

by Andrea Cooley

The health reform act signed by President Obama on March 30 is a hot topic whether you’re a clinician, a student or a patient. If you are wondering what it means for you, we found some documents that do a good job of summarizing the facts.

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) provides a good overview of what is of interest for doctors and medical students in the bill here. It includes information about incentive payment for primary care, Medicaid, graduate medical education, teaching health centers, prevention and wellness, workforce provisions, Title VII reauthorization, primary care extension program, national health service corps, rural health and research.

The bill also deals with federal financial aid program. Read what AACOM says about student loan reform revisions.

Paging Dr. Know-it-all

by Courtney Tompkins

I’m not a doctor. I don’t even play 1 on TV. My degrees are solely in the communication arts. It is possible that I am the lowest qualified person AT DMU to answer a health question. And yet sometimes I just CAN NOT bite my tongue.

Not to worry, I don’t give medical advice as an expert or to the clinic patients who dial my phone on accident but sometimes when friends or acquaintances mention something…I turn into lil miss know-it-all.

October 6-12 is National Physician Assistant Week. Physician Assistants are a vital part of our health care system. Remember to thank them for what they do both this week and in the future.

As part of PA Week, DMU PA students will be offering blood pressure screening at Valley West Mall Saturday October 10, 12-4 p.m. Stop by to check your blood pressure and meet some of our students!

DMU is Living United

by Courtney Tompkins

Des Moines University is serious about community service. We do SO many projects every year it’s hard to keep track of them. So when United Way of Central Iowa had a contest for videos describing how an organization “Lives United,” I knew we had to enter. Here’s our video:

What do you think?? United Way must’ve liked it as they chose it as best overall video! I’m thrilled and glad we could contribute to their great message. (Thanks to all the great DMU people who helped put it together!) To see the other contest videos, click here.
