Discover DMU!

Check out the anatomy lab

Check out the anatomy lab!

Have you ever gone on a campus tour and felt like you didn’t really get to see the heart and guts of the school? We don’t want that to happen at DMU. We also don’t want you to visit and leave without every question answered. So if you’re thinking you want to enter the health care field (or your child or student does), then come check out Discover DMU on March 3.

It’s informal yet informative and you’ll get to see where students really learn and grow. You’ll hear about all 9 of our programs and go on a tour with a current student to our labs and classrooms and gym and all the other cool stuff that makes DMU awesome.

You’ll get to:

Come with questions! Our students are amazing and they are happy to share their experiences.

DMU is coming to a campus near you!

by Andrea Cooley

It’s travel season again for the admissions’ office. We don’t have nearly as many stops on our list as we did in the Fall, but we’re still going to be pretty busy for the next couple months. Check out our schedule here. If your school isn’t on the list, let us know. We’d love to plan a visit with your pre-health club or science class!

And if you’re in Des Moines or want to visit us, make sure to register for Discover DMU March 3. It’s a great way to see campus and learn about all of our programs!

Spend your summer doing research!

by Andrea Cooley

Research is key component for a successful medical and health science school and DMU is proud of its research department.

You don’t have to be a DMU student to rub shoulders with faculty and medical students, though! Every summer, undergraduate students work with faculty researchers for 8 weeks on projects in microbiology, pharmacology, physiology, biochemistry and physical therapy.

Students work up to 40 hours per week and receive a stipend of $10/hour. Housing is not provided. It’s a great way to dip a toe in the water of graduate school or research and see what the research world is all about!

Dump your plump? Yes!

by Daley Dodd

This is me stuffing my face with last minute chocolate and candy before I stepped on the scale for the first time!

Many of you may know about the Dump Your Plump program going on here at DMU. Dump Your Plump is a 10-week team wellness challenge amongst the faculty, staff and students here. Teams have 4-10 people and are in essence competing for health. There will be participants trying to maintain their weight and others that are trying to lose some. All participants are required to work out 5 times a week for 30 minutes at minimum so it looks like the Wellness Center is going to be packed!

Well folks, I am taking up the challenge and trying to dump my plump. I am actually not focusing on the weight loss part but am hoping by working out on a continual basis the weight will come off and just be an added bonus.

Let’s just say…I don’t really enjoy working out all the much and probably enjoy sweets a lot too much so this is going to be a big challenge for me. But my team is awesome and I know they will be dragging me to the gym….even if I am kicking and screaming (which is a highly likely). My hopes are that at the end of these 10 weeks my body will crave to work out and my behaviors/attitude towards working out will have changed.

Wear red Friday (Feb. 5)!

by Courtney Tompkins

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in America. Join folks across the nation in wearing red Friday to raise awareness of this horrible, oft preventable, disease and help connect people to the American Heart Association.

If you’re on campus, stop by the SEC Commons, Feb. 3-5, noon-1, to donate $5 or more to the American Heart Association. For your donation, you’ll get a FREE “Red Dress” lapel pin! The Preventive Medicine Club and Women’s Medical Alliance are sponsoring and staffing this activity. ALL proceeds will go to American Heart.

You can also be a fan of the “Go Red” effort on Facebook!

Do you need Super Bowl food?

by Daley Dodd

I know you do! Well then this is perfect for you… my class is selling Papa Murphy’s discount cards as our class fundraiser.

We will be selling the cards February 1 – 5 in the Student Education Center commons area. Cards are only $5 and there is more than a $33 value on the cards. There is no expiration date on the cards and they can be used at any Papa Murphy’s around the country.

We would love any support you would be willing to give us as we are raising funds for our Physician Assistant National Conference in May. There are numerous students from the PA Class of 2011 that hope to go and this is one way we are raising funds to do that.

So if you need some pizza for Sunday’s big game…. come on over to the commons and pick up a card. We would really appreciate any support!
