Biochemistry and Nutrition

Mission

The mission of the biochemistry and nutrition department at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences is to educate DMU students, engage in scholarly activity and serve the university and community.

Vision

The faculty of the biochemistry and nutrition department will be recognized for the quality of their teaching and scholarship and for their commitment to student success.

Our faculty members conduct scholarly work spanning diverse areas such as the metabolism of proliferating cells, the mechanisms underlying the development of hypertension, bioinformatics and statistical applications in healthcare and biomedical sciences, and innovations in medical education.

In addition to delivering educational content for multiple clinical programs, the faculty members from the department provide mentorship to students in DMU’s Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences programs.

The department also supports DMU’s Mentored Student Research Program, an initiative led by the University’s Office of Research, which has offered research experiences to undergraduate and medical students since 2001. In addition, faculty are committed to DMU’s vision of championing community service through our longstanding collaboration with STEM programs offered by local schools.
