New Department: Iowa Simulation Center for Patient Safety and Clinical Skills
Effective March 1, 2008, the College of Osteopathic Medicine established a new department--the Iowa Simulation Center for Patient Safety and Clinical Skills. The department is composed of the following divisions: Human Simulation lab, Basic Surgical Skills, Physical Diagnosis and Standardized Patient Assessment Lab. Michael Flood, D.O. will chair the department and Greg Kolbinger, P.A., Marjean Tryon, R.N., Roberta Wattleworth, D.O., and Kyla Carney, D.O., will direct each of the divisions, respectively. The purpose of this new department is a more cohesive approach to these rapidly emerging and critical components of student education. The expectation is an in-depth integration of each of these important areas of the curriculum into an experiential process that promotes multidisciplinary teamwork and student learning with an ultimate focus on patient safety.

Department of Behavioral Medicine
During the past ten weeks, several D.O., D.P.T., and D.P.M. students have participated in Dr. Means' elective "Spiritual and Religious Issues in Patient Care." Class time has been devoted to studying how and when healthcare providers can sensitively and effectively address spiritual issues with patients. Representatives from a number of different faith traditions have presented an overview of what providers need to know to deliver culturally and spiritually attuned medical care to patients from their respective traditions. The perspectives included: Islam, Judaism, Native American, Jehovah's Witness, and Buddhism. The class also heard presentations from a spiritual director, parish nurse, and healing touch practitioner. A high point of each class is time spent shadowing a chaplain. This year, students worked with chaplains from Mercy Medical Center, Broadlawns Medical Center, and Hospice of Central Iowa. This elective is offered each year in January.

Upcoming Medical Service Trip to El Salvador
This summer, 14 students, and nine clinicians and faculty will travel to El Salvador to participate in a one-week medical service trip. The group will be hosted by the Comandos De Salvamento, an organization very similar to the Red Cross. The group will visit the southwest part of the country and will work with four communities: Berlin, Alegria, San Augustin and Puerto Parada. Berlin will be the “regional base” for the group. Earthquakes and storms have ruined much of the country and left many with medical problems.
The mission of the trip will include visits to patients' homes, a site for minor surgeries, physical therapy sessions, and classes in public health.
