On Campus
Events
The International Medicine Club and Educational
Support Services is hosting the first annual Lunar New
Year celebration on Monday, February 11th. 2008 is the
year of the rat and to celebrate, the students will be
entertained by a Calligraphy writer, a Lion's head
dance, a silk dance, a bamboo dance and a fan dance. The
event will take place in the SEC commons from 6 p.m. to
8 p.m. and dinner will be provided to the first 100
people in attendance.
On Saturday February 16th the Women's Medical
Alliance will be hosting Girls in Science Day. The
purpose of the event is to show 5th and 6th grade girls
that science is not only fun but is important in
everyday life. Stations include Surgery Station,
Chemistry Station, Anatomy Station and OMM/PT
Station.
Dave Pallone will be on the Des Moines University
campus on Thursday, February 21st through Friday,
February 22nd. Dave is a former Major League Baseball
umpire who believes that he was fired because of
his sexual orientation. Now Mr. Pallone travels around
the Country speaking with Universities and Corporations
as a Diversity Trainer specializing in sexual
orientation.
Saturday, February 23rd, Des Moines University is
hosting the annual Winter Gala. The Winter Gala is held
at the Polk County Convention Complex from 8 o'clock
p.m. until midnight. This function is a black tie affair
for the Des Moines University students. Throughout the
night, students are entertained with live music, dancing
and desserts.
March 6th is when Educational Support Services will
host a fashion show. The fashion
show educates students on purchasing clothes
without paying a lot for them. This year's categories
include SPAL-wear, Spring-wear, Red Carpet and
Club-wear.
Student Services has 5 student workshops schedule in
the spring semester of 2008, 3 of which are taking place
in February and early March:
On Wednesday, January 30th, Dr. Mark Oleson, from the
University of Missouri-Columbia Personal Financial
Planning Department, is presenting a lecture entitled
"Understanding Your Credit: Credit Reports and Credit
Scoring". Dr. Oleson will teach students how credit
scoring works as well as why it is important to
understand how credit works and how good and bad credit
can affect the student's future.
Dr. Mark Oleson will return on Friday, February 29th
to discuss a topic entitled "Loan Consolidation
Strategies". Dr. Oleson will speak on the different
programs that are available to students as well as when
to consolidate loans. Student Services finds this
lecture to be beneficial because considering the debt
load of an average medical student, smart decisions can
save a student thousands of dollars in interest.
March 6th features Susan Kerr, from the Consumer
Protection Division, Office of the Attorney General,
State of Iowa. Susan's lecture topic is "Identity Theft:
Don't let it Happen to You". In her discussion, Susan
