Dr. Alison Clarey
Dr. Alison Clarey, of Dayton, Ohio, graduated in 1972 from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University in Des Moines, Iowa, and completed an internship and a general surgery residency in 1977 at the Grandview Hospital in Dayton. She was AOA board certified in general surgery in 1982, and the only female osteopathic physician to receive certification that year.
Dr. Clarey has had a successful general surgery practice in Dayton since 1978, and today has offices in Dayton, Centerville, and Huber Heights. She also serves as program director of general surgery at Grandview Hospital; as co-director of the Bariatric Surgery Clinic at Cassano Health Center in Dayton; as clinical professor of general surgery at Wright State University Medical School in Dayton; and as associate clinical professor of general surgery, general surgery OPTI chair, and a member of the medicine advisory board at Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) in Athens.
She was chief of staff at Grandview and Southview Hospitals in 1991 and 1992. She serves the Dayton community by providing free surgical care for indigent patients and she assists with service projects of local organizations. She has efforts overseas through her work with STARFISH (Society Taking Active Responsibility for International Self Help). A volunteer in STARFISH's annual medical projects, she has donated her surgical services in medically underserved countries such as Sierra Leone, Madagascar, and Guatemala. She served as president of STARFISH in 1994 and 1995.
A member of the ACOS since 1981 and a Fellow since 1987, Dr. Clarey was the first woman to serve as the College’s president. She has served on the ACOS Board of Governors since 1997, and on the College’s Strategic Planning, Nominating, Membership, Ethics, Investment, and Executive committees. She is also a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and is an Ohio delegate to the AOA.
Recognized throughout her career, she was named YWCA Woman of the Year in 1991; STARFISH Volunteer of the Year in 1996; ACOS Humanitarian Award recipient in 2000; ASBS Bariatric Center of Excellence Surgeon in 2005 and 2006; and recipient of the 2006 OU-COM Phillips Medal of Public Service for her service as osteopathic leader, teacher, and provider of free surgical services.
She is a pilot in the Dayton Pilots Club and the Ninety-Nines' the international women pilots association founded by Amelia Earhart; and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Women in Aviation International.
Dr. Clarey has been a real supporter of DMU by taking students on rotations for over 15 years, and she continues to participate in the Global Health Efforts.
